Everyone of us wants the perfect phone that makes us feel better and Believe me when I say your phone is your best friend as far as the 21st century is concerned with phones really becoming extra powerful.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 is such a massive technology which sets itself apart from the older version of the “Galaxy S” line. It’s huge and very impressive in many ways.
Although with some lags which might be a detriment to its totality, it’s still the best Android device you can buy this year.
If you ask me why I think that it deserves such a heap of praise I would reply saying I really did had a very awesome time with the peers we reviewed here at Brumpost.
The 5.8 inch curved display with a nearly bezel-less design which now features the demise of the old Samsung’s oval-shaped home button and its accompanying buttons (Previous and Option buttons) instead we saw a very beautiful phone with a very little bezels.
Screen buttons are now employed and a pressure sensitive button is all there to keep the device awake.
Bixby Samsung’s junior AI virtual assistant gets a button of its own although wrongly placed below the volume key while Fingerprints Scanner might not be in a right position.
A nice 12MP camera captures a really awesome photograph in low-lights while also recording a huge 4k video is very possible. The Quad HD AMOLED display is a good VR headset ready.
Many things set this apart from its predecessor. Apart from the fact that all Samsung Galaxy smartphones released this year are curved and now feature a new look, they all feature amazingly high technology.
The S8 also is an IP68 rated smartphone which makes it a resistant to both Water and Dust.
Taking good the risk to submerge the device in the office’s aquarium for a couple or minutes doesn’t affect anything. It’s just a very good thing to consider for those who are very adventurous. So taking selfies while swimming on water isn’t a fiction.
It’s real.
Although the biggest dilemma is the battery. Not as strong as it’s sibling the Galaxy S8 Plus which features a 3500 mAh battery although it comes at a price and it might be too huge for your liking, Samsung didn’t make this one a very great battery despite its very nice features.
While the battery is way better than many smartphone in the same league as the Galaxy S8, an heavy user might have to always carry a Powerbank along whenever you’re going for a huge event that will require you using your smartphone almost throughout that event.
USB-C is now included making fast charging a possibility while wireless charging is also featured. Memory is extensible with MicroSD card despite its huge internal storage.
Iris scanner is meant to recognise your face and save it for future security reasons such as unlocking. And it’s blazing fast processor is just what sets it apart from all others.
Samsung Galaxy S8 is expensive. Fact!
There is a price for its beauty. For as high as $699, you can get a really nice Samsung Galaxy S8.
(Hardware)
The Design is awe-inspiring
Aside having to drop a huge check to get one of these premium looking smartphone which brighten up your personality, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is by no means a completely unique in every way.
I mean it’s quite unique but it’s got its flaws too just like any other smartphone in the market.
Apart from the fact that it’s been really redesigned to give a really sleeker look, there are still traditional features which are left on.
For example, the presence of an Headphone jack still makes us wonder why Apple ditched this hardware too soon. MicroSD and SIM Slot are all essential for Android users and Samsung is very considerate here.
As futuristic as it looked, it’s a reality.
Despite its alien design, anyone can actually realise switching from an iPhone, LG or Huawei smartphone is worth it just to have an experience with the S8.
It was only before that there is a variant with curved screen but now the whole of Samsung’s Flagships are curved on both sides of the screen.
It’s beautiful and it’s amazing. Samsung is simply a genius with the awesome design. But aside it’s greatness, the fingerprint scanner position might not be at the right place to sit.
This takes you some forces to scan through since the scanner is situated right beside the camera.
The device is strong but not extremely strong.
It’s screen is okay considering its Corning Gorilla Glass 5 coating but get, you’re still going to need a casing to keep the device safe in case you might drop it.
Dropping my own copy slightly on the kitchen slide didn’t give any noticeable cracks or scratches. The back of the phone and the front teeth glass are brilliantly curved into its metallic rim at the sides of the phone.
It’s coating is a very great one which even when held doesn’t show any sign of peeling off or whatsoever.
But worrying about accidents is a really good move which I why you should get a really cool casing which can help protect your phone from potential damaging or some unnecessary scratches.
No more oval-shaped home button alongside its siblings that sits on both sides. The nearly bezel-less design had made this a possibility whereby the absence hasn’t only added to the device’s beauty but also a trend in the
Android culture where most manufacturers now uses on-screen navigation rather than any physical form.
Bixby has its own button on the left just below the camera which at times can be a confusing button to volume-down button. In many cases, I’ve accidentally tapped on Bixby thinking I was trying to lower the phone’s volume but I was wrong.
Power button resides at the right side which keeps it farther away from being probably confused to The Lefties.
The device feels and looks awesome.
I personally give it a huge thumb-up. Samsung is though a trendsetter but I’d assume if they had copied Sony by placing the fingerprint scanner right at the side if the phone instead of the long way back, it might have been sexier.
Also, no more camera bump unlike the older version of the device. It’s single 12MP camera sensor is way powerful and it’s doing its job even better than ever.
It’s way lighter despite the presence of Gorilla glass at its rear views. It’s slim and fits so well easily into small hands.
Unlike Google Pixel that doesn’t have a protection on its camera sensor, there is on the Galaxy S8 to keep things well better off in case you put down your phone on its back.
It can scratch off (Don’t mind Gorilla glass though) and that won’t be good for future use of your camera.
The Presence of USB-C goes a long way.
It’s there to make transfers from and to PC and also fast charging your S8 within 1hour and fee minutes is just a plug away. Also, the headphone jack sits besides the USB port.
Although Apple the so-called futuristic maker had had outcasted the headphone jack hut Samsung isn’t doing away with it so soon as it claimed “it’s something consumers still need.”
The headphone jack seems right even with third party headphones. The one that comes out if the box with the device is way awesome.
It sounds just right and I praise Samsung for still being considerate (even being old school can be way better) because the headphone jack still needs to stay.
Screen and Display
5 8 inch screen might be your turn off considering the 4.7 inches on iPhone 8. Even the larger iPhone 8 Plus isn’t this large. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and the iPhone X has the same screen size although the latter is way smaller than the S8.
It’s a very good point anyway since it’s bigness is what makes it amazing and I love it.
The S8 has the most amazing screen you’d ever expect on a smartphone.
It’s rich color and it’s black and whiteness is as if you’re gonna be picking out those things featured in it. Apart from just a mere word of mouth, if you turn on the phone, it’s crystal clear display makes everything seem in order.
Watching HD videos or scanning through high resolution pictures just feel amazing. It’s real cool and looks real.
It’s a good bet for the Samsung Gear VR.
It works wonder and it’s about being the best premium Android phone you’d have this year Anyway.
Although I have a big hand and a whopping 5.8 inch screen night feel right for my palm (wonder why I like big phones) but those who have smaller hands might feel cheated.
I mean come to think about it, 5.8 is a phablet. The older Galaxy Note 1 isn’t as big as this. No wonder it’s other sibling the S8+ is way huger with a 6.2 inch screen display.
IPhone 8 wins here as Apple tries to still keep their flagship as simple and brief as possible.
But that’s not the story, the fact that the display seem huge doesn’t make the phone huge. It’s well crammed into its small form factor; although quite long. It has a screen ratio of 18.5:9.
So this would be a good news for gamers or entertainment enthusiasts assuming you’re one. Watching movies just feels right and it’s very clean.
The same goes for games. Although not all hands might take the entire screen which leaves you with some dark bars by each side of the screen.
But these can house the games control making it easier to play fighter games for example wherefore your hands won’t block your actions.
Also, watching HDR videos which is a new feature for mobile on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video is now a possibility. The S8 features an HDR screen which makes video quality a really high quality which gives you a great entertainment experience.
More files more spaces. With the huge 64GB (No more memory variants like the older S7) and a MicroSD slot, you’re not going to probably run out of space any moment soon.
Also it’s Exynos 8895 or it’s variant Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system on chip works wonder as it gives it a lot of willpower to go through the biggest multiple tasking or huge applications usage without any hiccup.
“AKG” the headphone bundled with the S8 out of the box sounds much better than Apple’s EarPod. Although it’s not as amazingly powerful than the traditional headphones you’d find in your older Samsung boxes (Just a change of brand/manufacturer here might be a bit deceitful) but testing the difference doesn’t seem very obvious but all in all, the general overview of the Samsung Galaxy S8 feels great and genuine with lots of premium quality attached to it.
Specifications
The Samsung Galaxy S8 comes in two variations. The one with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and the other Samsung’s very own Exynos 8895 chipset which is powered with a 4GB of RAM.
As far as memory is concerned, it’s a huge 64GB of inbuilt storage although that can be way upgraded using a MicroSD card which had a slot just within the SIM tray. The addition of memory can go as high as 256GB.
For battery capacity you have a reasonable 3000 mAh battery. Samsung didn’t do well about this for a high standard device but it’s not a bad deal.
Screen is a 1440 X 2960 pixels which is equivalent to a 570 DPI (Dots Per Inch) of sharpness.
As it is, the device carries a really strong display with an amazing processor and a quite strong enough battery that would last for through the day depending on your level of usage though.
Although specs might not be as extreme as you’d expect but it’s a really piece of device that’s worth its cost right in your palm.
It runs Android Nougat 7.0 and touchwiz is now Samsung Experience. All the changes made are for the betterment of user’s experience. Also featured is the Samsung’s voice assistant called Bixby.
It’s a new piece of AI software that performs some simple tasks for you such as dialling numbers, texting, opening apps, reading news or local weather etc.
It’s a replacement for the older S-Voice. That means a lot of changes took place on the S8.
3000 mAh battery isn’t very bad
When I handled the Samsung Galaxy S8 peer sent over to Niroid, I did all I could to finish up its battery life as soon as possible by doing series of bombardment.
Surfing the Web, playing HD action games and watching videos on memory card. All these weren’t just things the phone’s battery can handle by default it’s a thing it can do all day long.
Dont be deceived by the 3000 mAh battery though it sounds too teeny-tiny compared to others with massive battery in the league of 5000 mAh.
But the case with the device’s chipset doesn’t require the phone consumption of much battery despite its high capacity.
The battery is quite superior and way better than we’d expected although it didn’t totally freak me out because I still expected more.
There is a bunch of battery management software bundled with the device which all help to reduce battery consumption as easy as possible. Aside this, it’s fast charging capacity isn’t a make out. With the presence of USB-C, that’s a reasonable change. Wireless technology didn’t go away too.
Like I mentioned earlier that I wasn’t totally thrilled by the battery’s performance, an instance whereby I had to take a quick walk down the street and then hand the device in my pocket after an immediate disconnection from the power never really had any effect but usage through the long street whereby I had to take continuous shots of events I was seeing and then listening to music at the same time.
At about noon, I checked into a cafe where I opened up YouTube and then went through some new videos and then I was bored so I tried installing a reasonable 700MB game (Need for speed) which needed me connecting to the café’s WiFi.
All these were to the detriment of the battery though but I was still able to play the game to satisfaction and took couple of sips of my soda.
By 6pm, I was left with 5% which needs to be recharged regardless. Mind you, it was a really long hour of testing and that’s to say I was continuously staring at the phone for those huge hours through the day.
A powerbank is a good bet in case you’re an adventurous person like I always say. You’d need to get one tucked into your backpack if you’re going on a really long trip.
Running a full function of the screen quality with the heavy usage of Internet connection and then streaming videos will impact the battery life within a short moment unlike using the battery saving mode which elongates the battery life.
Although many might wonder the need for such huge features while Still at battery detriment, it all possibly stems to the fact that Samsung wants us to still have a quality HD display in our hands which is capable of being used up with a VR.
The device’s back got a bit hot after my long usage and I was a bit scared but I wasn’t entirely; considering the fact that Samsung had earlier claimed that they employed a third party company to check out the battery’s performance.
It wasn’t bad though as this went back down after a little while.
All in all, the battery’s performance isn’t quite bad as it might seem and it can take you through the long day as I’ve said earlier. Heavy usage while still lasting till 6pm might mean a good point.
Camera
Camera isn’t bad although it’s just as the older one. It captures even the sharpness of all the objects which means a lot to those that wants that.
It’s vibrance is exceptional and it’s very accurate in many aspects.
But don’t get deceived even though the device’s camera still features many of those on the last edition.
The camera is just either two taps away using the power button or just a swipe away. It also features cool virtual masks just as seen on SnapChat.
This feature is also present on the other S8 Plus. With these, you can add up some really cool filters and some touch ups to make your photographs really amazing.
With lots of improvements in the software of the camera, you can also record a crystal clear HD videos at a higher resolution.
It’s camera is very wide and can capture a really larger portion of areas.
Just as it’s front camera can conveniently cover about 3 individuals, you won’t have anything to worry about in this respect.
The device’s camera also features a really cool aperture which makes images look great. It’s video is also OIS enabled which means you don’t have to worry alot even without a tripod while recording videos.
You can pinch to zoom in and out while still being able to use swiping for such as well.
Bixby can be involved in your shots if you’d like to make purchases or browse through bunches of images of similarities with the one you’re taking.
Back to the camera itself though, and it’s worth repeating that you’ll very rarely be dissatisfied with the images you’ll take, even quickly. The color reproduction seems a touch more muted and natural than in years gone by, but not by much, and the sharpness on offer is great.
Low light shots are way cool and doesn’t appear bad at all in any respect.
Another sweet thing is the Pro Mode of the camera where you’d be able to manually set the focal length of the image and the device camera will let you know that something is in focus.
While that night not be a big deal, the effect is that you’d have to drop off unnecessary third party camera apps because the default is working really well.
It’s fast launching makes me like it and it’s fast and rapid shots is another noteworthy fact. Face smile and gesture detection are all featured and seriously there are just way many features on the camera which is why I felt is way better than its competitors.
The bottom line
The Samsung Galaxy S8 is a really massive phone with its own features and problems. But weighing in on the positivity is just way longer and huger than the negativity.
I mean why would Bixby’s button or Fingerprints Scanner be the reason why you shouldn’t use a device of this quality.
The fact that it’s battery didn’t work for two or three days isn’t a new thing considering how long you’re going to be using the phone. Seriously, this phone is addictive and you’re going to chop off the battery life inch by inch but thanks to the massive power saving software and fast charging capabilities. All these makes it convenient to use.
Apart from its sweet designs, you will need a protective case to keep the beauty for a long-term. And it’s 5.8 inch screen won’t be too much for your hand.
In fact I would say this phone is for anyone that just wants to enjoy the massive peak of technological in 2017 because it’s really worth it.
Aside the pricing and other perks, you might consider one and it makes a reasonable gift to loved ones.
IPhone 8 and 8 Plus are a really great contender for those that prefer it smaller or just want a different piece of technology other than Android powered phones.
The Galaxy S8 Plus is really massive and way more bigger assuming you’re like me that prefers it bigger. Others such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, LG G6, Google Pixel XL, Huawei P10, OnePlus 5 are all cool devices that are worthy to look into assuming you’d prefer another phone other than the Samsung Galaxy S8.
But all in all, it’s a great.
