We’ve reported before that Google wants to go for a cheaper Snapdragon 768G over the high-end SD 865 chipset which is more expensive but found on flagship premium flagship devices. PhoneArena recently announced that the search engine giant is eyeing the SD 768G for its Pixel 5.

The reason for such drastic decision is said to be due to the pricing of 5G smartphones which has generally increased and high-end devices that uses the Snapdragon 865 SoC have also increased in pricing overtime. With that, Google either doesn’t want it’s devices to be over-priced or just doesn’t want to buy expensive chipsets in its flagship device.

So in a nutshell, the search giant is eyeing the Snapdragon 768G which is usually sported in mid-range smartphones and if this is true, then it will be the first time the Pixel digital series will use a Snapdragon 7 series chip.

But Snapdragon 768G isn’t bad afterall

The truth is that the Snapdragon 768G isn’t bad for a premium-tier device after all, it has powered numerous mid-tier devices successfully without any hiccup. The chip uses the Qualcomm Kryo 475 CPU Prime cores making it clock frequency of about 2.8GHz which is an increase from the previous 2.4GHz found on the previous Snapdragon 765G.

It also come with the Adreno 620 GPU while its performance is 15% higher than that of the 765G. The graphics card on the Chipset supports Adreno updateable GPU drive making it the first SD 7 series to have such capacity.

On the network side of things, it has the same X52 5G Modem with support for 100MHz sub-6 bandwidth and an additional 4xMIMO for low bandwidth connections. It also features a dual-mode SA/NSA 5G connectivity.

Other interesting additions to the chipset includes it’s Wi-Fi 6 support with 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously which extends support to Bluetooth 5.2 unlike the 5.0 version supported in the previous SD 765G that was released late last year.

What to expect from the Pixel 5

The Pixel 5 was earlier rumored to sport a different camera module design this time around which actually look polarizing based on it’s design, the device is also possibly going to feature wireless charging support and reverse wireless charging support with Android 11 pre-installed after all, Google owns Android right?

It is worth noting that Google suggested in a survey report that the Google Pixel 5 will be priced at $699. 　Considering that the Google Pixel 4 starts at $799 (6GB + 64GB), if the Pixel 5 starts at $699, then it will have no chance with the Snapdragon 865 platform.
