In the early days of the Android OS, HTC is known as the leading company ahead of Samsung but the table starts turning around especially with how fierce the smartphone industry had become in recent years. It’s as if HTC cannot survive this turn.
The company had been on some really serious rough path and sales had been dwindling. There are in fact rumors that the company might be stepping out of the mobile market while licensing it’s brand to third party manufacturers although that isn’t official.
One intriguing part is how the company went silent for nearly a year without releasing a single device in the mobile market while cutting most of its job in India. As companies like Huawei, Oppo, OnePlus, Asus and Samsung gets more aggressive by making outstanding smartphones, it’s as if HTC doesn’t want to go on anymore.
Now the saddest is a report that HTC might be retiring from the Chinese market as well which is the largest smartphone market in the world. According to a report gotten from My SmartPrice and quotes from other local sources, the company is said to be closing down it’s virtual shops from two of the leading e-retailers in China which are TMall and JD. The only HTC products available on these platforms is the HTCVive Virtual Reality Headset.
HTC is based in Taiwan but has its own online store in China, but even there phones like the HTC U11, HTC U11+, and others are listed out of stock. HTC confirmed, partially, the move to close its online shops, mentioning “long-term business strategy” as the reason for doing so.
However the case may be with the company, it seems this is their hard time which is usually common. For example, BlackBerry Limited and Nokia lost their market credibility which is usually due to not evolving fast enough with the general trend as the industry switches to newer ideas and innovations.
In my own opinion, I think HTC didn’t meetup because it couldn’t create outstanding devices alongside business strategies that would make it stand firm beside competitors. They also do not have great visual designs on their devices and most of all, the structure of the company might not be very accommodating to better ideas. But whatever it is, I’d like to see HTC bouncing back soon enough.
