I tried checking our official Facebook page this afternoon but noticed the system wasn’t going through. Initially, I thought it has something to do with my VPN which I turned off but the result was the same.
I then tried another web browser – Mozilla Firefox and nothing positive came and my logged WhatsApp on the Firefox browser was also disconnected so I came to the conclusion that “Facebook’s services were down”.
This isn’t a new phenomenon in the tech industry as big tech companies often run out of servers or are just down for temporal maintenance. For over an hour, the issue has persisted across Facebook’s three social platforms which include WhatsApp and Instagram all unreachable.
Data from the website suggests the outage is affecting user accounts globally so it’s not just a problem from my region.
According to Downdetector an outage tracker, nearly 80,000 reports for WhatsApp and more than 50,000 for Facebook were logged on the system.
BBC also reported that some users reported the problems using Facebook’s virtual reality headset Oculus.
The social media company has however stated that “We are aware some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.”
No official reason for the problem was given.
IT experts feel the issue might have something to do with Facebook’s Domain Name System popular refer to as DNS which might not be routing well across the company’s server.
DNS is often compared to an address book or phone book for the internet, pointing web browsers to the computer system which serves the website they are looking for.
It’s surprising that a big company like Facebook can have a such problem but with time, we hope they can resolve the issue and get back online fully.
