Amazon had decided on Monday to hire some 75,000 people for jobs ranging from warehouse staffs to delivery drivers as demands keeps growing due to the Coronavirus pandemic which had caused the complete lock down of numerous states in the US.
The number of online shopping keeps rising and the company recently announced it will be pausing it’s online grocery due to the lack of delivery slots available. Despite the company willing to hire lots more employees, it still face daunting tasks of hiring more people even as calls grow for it to shut off it’s facilities with numerous reports of cases of COVID-19. The company, which has reported virus cases among warehouse staff and faced several demonstrations, said it would roll out temperature checks and face masks for staff at all of its U.S. and European warehouses.
As even elected officials have requested the closure of many Amazon facilities, the loss of job is through the roof as many companies had to close their businesses. Even Tesla had to furlough a number of employees while cutting the salaries of others. Amazon might be coming to the rescue which might still be a ridiculously dangerous thing to meddle with considering the current situation of the pandemic in the US alone which has the highest number of cases worldwide.
To draw new employees, the company had said it would add $2 to its minimum $15 per hour to U.S. workers’ wages through April. Amazon also made it known it had filled up all of the 100,000 initial positions it advertised earlier and that the new jobs are in addition to that.
Amazon also said it expects to spend more than US$500 million globally in order to increase wage for workers during the pandemic which is an increase from the initial US$350 Million.
“We know many people have been economically impacted as jobs in areas like hospitality, restaurants and travel are lost or furloughed as part of this crisis and we welcome anyone out of work to join us at Amazon until things return to normal and their past employer is able to bring them back,” the company said in a blog post bit.ly/3a3SdJI.
The number of employees at the company changes based on times and periods as the recent numbers grew to about 798,000 full and part-time workers before it even advertised the 100,000 jobs due to the pandemic. Meanwhile criticism continues to pour in from government and non-government bodies about how it had handled the outbreak which had caused more than 100 thousand deaths with millions of cases.
