Apple announced at its Wonderlust event earlier this week that iOS 17 will become available for download on most iPhones starting Monday. Additionally, they introduced the new iPhone 15 models.
iOS 17 comes with several new features, including StandBy mode, the Journal app, and significant changes to Messages. However, not all users of older iPhones will have access to these new features. If you have owned an iPhone from 2017 or earlier, you might be among those unable to upgrade to iOS 17.
To determine whether your iPhone is compatible with iOS 17, you can check your device’s model in your settings. Simply open the Settings app, tap on General, and then select About. Next to the Model Name, you’ll find information about your iPhone model.
In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of checking your iPhone’s compatibility with iOS 17.

Apple has confirmed that the following iPhone models will be able to run iOS 17 when it becomes available later this year:
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 Mini
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 13 Mini
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone SE (second generation and later)
- iPhone 14 (including Plus)
- iPhone 14 Pro
However, three iPhone models won’t support iOS 17 with its release: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. For those who own iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 series devices, they were left without feature upgrades starting with iOS 16’s release last year, and these phones will continue to run iOS 15.
So, what should you do if your iPhone doesn’t appear on the iOS 17 compatibility list? If your iPhone is not mentioned above, it means it won’t support iOS 17, and you won’t receive a notification to download the latest software. For example, if you possess an iPhone X or iPhone 8, the most advanced software available for those devices will remain iOS 16.
While older iPhones won’t be able to access the latest iOS version or its new features, they will remain functional for a period. Furthermore, Apple will continue to provide security updates for iOS 16. In July 2023, Apple released the latest security update for iOS 15, and it intends to release additional security updates for iOS 16 shortly.
The new update is set to be released on Monday for most iPhones, and it introduces several new features and changes. However, users with older iPhones, specifically those from 2017 or earlier, won’t be able to enjoy these new features.
To check if your iPhone is compatible with iOS 17, go to Settings > General > About and locate the Model Name.
If your iPhone is on the compatibility list, you’re in luck; otherwise, if you own an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone X, you’ll be limited to iOS 16.
Nevertheless, even if your iPhone can’t upgrade to the latest iOS, it should remain functional, receiving security updates for iOS 16 in the foreseeable future.
