Back in September when Huawei CEO Richard Yu took to stage to announce the company’s decision to proceed with the Harmony OS for Huawei’ devices by the year 2021, everyone was a bit glad to hear this. Although not people from outside of China considering the fact that the company has drifted even farther away from Google Mobile Service which was due to its ban by the U.S. government, the newest is that the development of the software for mobile devices is actually under development already and could be launched this year.

The report also stated that there were some selected devices that will support the new operating system and will be on for beta testing by the end of the year.

This report was based on a Weibo user with the username Changan Digital King who stated that the Hongmeng OS developer beta version could be released by December 18th. He furthered that some devices will be able to support the upgrade by January ad February of 2021 before the operating system is globally rolled out few months afterward.

The first occurrence of the Harmony OS was back in 2019 when the company first got the U.S. ban to stop its relationship with Google and an array of U.S.-based companies prompting the company to roll out the first Harmony OS in an Honor Smart display.

The operating system is designed to work on anything ranging from smartphones, computers, cars, smart watches as well as smart home gadgets and all other consumer electronics which will help Huawei create its own product’s ecosystem that could rival the likes of Apple if it ever find a global success.

While there had been rumors in the past that the recently announced Mate 40 series will be able to run the operating system out of the box, the company opted to go for Android instead with the device sporting the latest EMUI 11 built on top of the Android 10 (AOSP).

Early adopters of the Harmony OS will be users who have been using the EMUI 11 which incudes flagships such as the Mate 40 series or the MatePad Pro tablet.

The success of the Harmony OS is dependent on its reception by the Chinese people but its chance of surviving outside of China is pretty slim considering how influential Google is meanwhile in our previous article about how Biden’s Administration could influence tech, if miraculously the ban is reversed, Huawei can go its own way with the Harmony OS while employing Google services such as the GMail, Google Maps and other Google-related services just if Google is willing to have another rival aside Apple for its Android Operating system considering the fact that Huawei promised that the Harmony OS will run Android-related applications and software.
