HTC can never be forgotten in the modern smartphone world and the sudden demise of the company during the rise of intense competition was really shocking and disappointing to me considering how an innovative company that was right at the fore front can suddenly disappear from the scene so quickly but while HTC went through numerous phases, all hope isn’t lost yet as the company tries to make a come back in the mobile smartphone world. But hey, HTC released two smartphones, the U20 5G and Desire 20 Pro.
While it seems like HTC much like BlackBerry had fallen off the cliff already, the company seems to be climbing up thanks to the new CEO of the company Yves Maitre who promised to bring the company back to the smartphone scene and regain it’s lost glory and here we are some months later which means he’s delivering his promises.
While HTC wasn’t entirely dead, the company ventured into other businesses especially into the Virtual Reality space where it is one of the top guys although that industry in itself isn’t thriving as much as it was anticipated back when it was gaining global recognition but that’s a story for another time.
The Taiwanese tech company this week unveiled two new Android-powered mid range smartphones which is the HTC U20 5G as well as Desire 20 Pro and it’s an awesome device that has a large 6.8-inch display which seems to be the largest the company had made which took over from the previous HTC One Max whose display was merely 5.9-inch.
HTC U20 5G
But speaking of the new HTC U20 5G, the new smartphone sports some really nice but not over the top mid range specifications such as a 1080P LCD screen with a tall 20:9 aspect ratio as well as a 60Hz refresh rate but has no HDR resolution compared with other mid rangers such as those from Xiaomi and Oppo but I won’t compare both companies at the moment considering their situations.
Speaking of the “5G” naming on the device, this is due to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset which powers the smartphone and it’s value for money as it falls at the mid-range spectrum.
Other important specifications of the HTC U20 5G includes a large 256GB of internal storage as well as support for a MicroSD card while also sporting an 8GB of RAM. While the official pricing of the device isn’t yet made known, it might not be time to rejoice over the fact that the smartphone has large storage which equals those on the much expensive Huawei P40 Pro for example.
Another thing of concern to the die hard fans of HTC is the availability of the device outside of it’s home country, Taiwan. But you might be able to get one out of the country assuming HTC decides they want to first gain dominance in their home country first. But all in all, this should be a smartphone that would excel considering how well HTC had built it’s skin in the past and how solid it’s hardware design would be.
Like the HTC U20 5G for example, it sports a quad rear camera with a really simple back with a fingerprint sensor. As for the front facing camera, it’s a single hole-punch camera positioned at the top left corner of the smartphone. And since the display is quite large, then that wouldn’t be a problem to users in any way.
Nokia made a similar smartphone which will be released by July, the Nokia 8.3 5G which is priced at about US$500 and it has almost identical specification as the HTC U20 5G such as a 6.81-inch 1080p LCD screen and powered by a Snapdragon 765G chipset. The camera department of the Nokia 8.3 5G is a 64MP Zeiss optics with an additional 12MP ultrawide sensor and then another 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors. The camera at the front is a 24MP Zeiss sensor which obviously has some higher quality over the HTC U20 5G.
Unlike the HTC U20 5G which had a 48MP primary sensor and then coupled with an 8MP and then another dual 2MP sensors to make up for the quad setup with a 32MP front facing sensor.
But away from the camera department, the HTC U20 5G did have a really massive 5000mAh battery which is really excellent and since we all have a good memory of HTC’s battery capability, this can be a long lasting smartphone in 2020 by the time it’s released and it has support for an 18W fast charge capacity.
HTC Desire 20 Pro
The other smartphone HTC released is the Desire 20 Pro which seems to be a brother to the U20 5G and is a little smaller than it’s other sibling sporting a 6.5-inch 1080p LCD panel and also has the massive 5000mAh battery and support fast charging with 15W capacity.
Away from the display and battery, the smartphone has a quad camera setup as well just the same exact specs found on the U20 which is a 48MP + 8MP + 2MP + 2MP while the front camera is a 25MP sensor.
For the HTC Desire 20 Pro, the smartphone has no support for 5G but 4G instead and it’s powered by the Snapdragon 665 chipset with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage which can as well be expanded using a microSD card.
Meanwhile there are some other mid-range smartphones that are actually doing well despite sporting the same specs just as the HTC Desire 20 Ppro. Take the Sony Xperia 10 II as an example, the device has a 6.0 OLED display with a taller 21:9 aspect ratio. The camera department of the device is a simple 12MP primary sensor as well as offering support for a 2X telephoto lens with an 8MP sensor which adds up to the device’s initial 8MP ultrawide camera.
The battery of the Sony Xperia 10 II in this case is a 3,600mAh which is quite smaller compared to the 5000mAh of the Desire 20 Pro. The Pricing of the Xperia 10 II is about US$400 which isn’t bad of a deal considering the fact that the mid-range smartphone sorts some features usually found on high-end smartphones.
