IDC, the popular research firm in its recent publishing has released data which showed performance of the Indian smartphone market in the first quarter of the year 2020 which showed a positive result despite the fact that the global smartphone market is current under wrecks due to the havoc caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.
As of the first quarter of the year 2020, India recorded an estimated shipment of about 32.4 million smartphone units which makes this a 1.5% year on year as against the 20.3% and 16.0% Year-on-Year decline recorded by the Chinese and US markets respectively.
This increase can be much attributed to sales via online channels which saw a growth of 9.0% YoY in the Q1 2020 as online sales recorded a market share of 43.1% while offline channel shipments declined by 3.5% YoY. And as for the Feature Phone market in India, there is a decline of about 29.4% with an estimated 22.8 milion units shipment in Q1 2020.
Then in terms of ranking, Xiaomi maintained it’s number one sport in the market with a Q1 shipment totalling 10.1 million units which gave the company a 3.4% YoY boost. The company was able to sell its Redmi Note 8 series very much during the Q1 which makes it it’s biggest selling point.
Right after the Chinese smartphone giant comes in Vivo in the second place with a 63.3% YoY all thanks to its affordable Y Series and S1 and S1 Pro smartphones. Samsung although didn’t make an increase as it suffered a 28.4% YoY decline in the Q1 as the company recorded its lowest ever shipment numbers since 5 years sat at the third place. Pricing issues with the Galaxy M series and Galaxy A series of smartphones caused a low consumer interest and high channel inventory.
RealMe on the other hand also saw an increase right over Oppo which places it at the fourth place in terms of its shipment volume during the Q1. Though a sub brand of Oppo, RealMe it was able to ship as much as 4.3 million units of smartphones while its top-selling devices includes the RealMe 5i, 5s, C2/C3 and RealMe 6.
BBK subsidiary OPPO completes the top 5 with a 41% YoY growth. However, the brand’s latest Reno3 and F15 smartphones were no match for competing models which offered better pricing and features.
