It might be too soon to be talking about the next-gen iPhone 13 because the iPhone 12 is still very much in the market it set a new standard for the future-gen iPhones such as the one we’ll be discussing in this short post.

Not going to be called iPhone 13

While some of us might be expecting an iPhone 13 already, some insider’s report has it that the 2021 iPhone is probably going to carry the naming “S” and according to prominent Apple products leaker Jon Prosser, he claimed that his source stated this to being the name of next device – iPhone 12 S Series.

Another theory for why the naming might be excluded in the entire iPhone product line is due to the negative connotations identified with the number 13 in some cultures which might ultimately be the demise of the product line “iPhone 13” but who knows maybe Apple might just skip like Samsung and continue the naming from iPhone 14 by the year 2022.

The design changes to expect

Apple continued to stick with the same design aesthetics for almost its entire product line. The iPhone X was the pathfinder and many years, the design of newer iPhones remain the same. However there have been mild changes to the look and feel of various upgrades of the iPhone since 2017 and that includes tweaks in the camera module for the iPhone 11 and now the squared-up edges in the iPhone 12.

As for the next-gen iPhone 12 “S” or whatever its going to be called, there might never be much differences as well because the notch is still probably going to be on it but there could be tweaks to making it smaller but the square edges will definitely still be around and maybe the charging port will be removed finally this time around.

As for the models, the report also has it that there will be four different iPhone 12S series which will all have different sizes but as usual, the naming will be interesting. Check it out below:

  • iPhone 12S mini (5.4-inch)
  • iPhone 12S (6.1-inch)
  • iPhone 12S Pro (6.1-inch)
  • iPhone 12S Pro Max (6.7-inch)

What to expect from the Display

Finally, iPhones might be getting a 120Hz refresh rate display for the first time if these reports come back positive. Other things to expect from the iPhone 12 S line up includes the ProMotion display with a variable refresh rate display due to its LTPO adoption.

This technology had been used in the Apple Watch and could finally be the time to deploy it to an iPhone in order bring the always-on display option as well as the 120Hz refresh rate capability.

CPU

We have no indication as to how Apple will power its 2021 iPhone yet. In recent years Apple has followed the very simple pattern of adding a new ‘A’ series chip to its iPhone each year. If Apple follows previous form, we can probably expect a new ‘A’ series chip, probably an A15, to feature.

So A15 it might be but whatever it is going to be its definitely going to be another much powerful chipset that will be equipped with all the technology that’ll make the device work much more efficiently and handle tasks faster. Since 5G technology is now permanently on the iPhone product line, a chipset strong enough to handle the heavy duty will be required.

Camera system

One of the not-so-prominent rumor about the next-gen iPhone 12 S is the inclusion of a Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera with the same triple-camera configuration as seen on current iPhones. There are also claims that the iPhone 12S line up base models will have the usual dual camera setup with nothing much changing.

Battery life

The battery should be good even though there haven’t been any official confirmation about it just yet not even rumors about what to expect. However, the screen size and the form factors of the devices will definitely have an impact on the look and feel of the device.

And if the LTPO display technology is employed to include a higher refresh rate, then the battery will need to be much bigger in order to be able to power the newer technology effectively.

It’s still a 5G smartphone

It is rumored the iPhone 12S ‘Pro’ lineup will feature both mmWave and Sub6 GHz 5G connectivity, whilst the basic models will only get mmWave. Sub6 offers substantially faster speeds compared to mmWave.

There will be USB-C, right?

If you’ve been hoping Apple will at some point adopt the USB Type-C on the iPhone line, then you need to let go of that hope because rumored moves by Apple might indicate the company permanently drifting away from anything of such.

Earlier we reported about Apple rumored to be planning on ditching the USB-C on the MacBook line for the olden MagSafe which we saw on the iPhone and that seems to have made its way back to the entire Apple products’ ecosystem so MagSafe maybe with no charging port in fact

Touch ID Returns?

A number of reports has it that Apple might be on the verge of bringing back the TouchID technology to the iPhone 12S but this time under the display rather than a dedicated button or scanner around the device. Under-display fingerprint scanners have been prevalent in the Android world and thanks to the OLED display, this has been possible and since Apple has deployed the OLED screen across all its iPhone line up, this trend will likely continue by 2021 which could encourage the inclusion of the under-display fingerprint scanner.

Again, there are no specific rumors about the price of the iPhone 12S yet, but in recent years Apple has followed the simple pattern of introducing a new phone at roughly similar price points to current models and then reducing the price of the old one. We’d be pretty surprised if the iPhone 12S is substantially different in price to iPhone 12. especially given the more minor ‘S’ upgrades apparently planned for this year. This is still a thousand dollar phone.

As for the debut date, the iPhone 12 was released a month later than its usual time which is due to the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic but the 2021 iPhones will debut at the usual month of September
