We made mention of the Snyder Cut and this isn’t a new thing as it’s been in the news over the past year and a half with #ReleaseTheSnyderCut periodically popping up on Twitter trend every now and then and with the launch of the streaming service, HBO Max, this was finally announced as the scheduled release is 2021.
So in case you’ve wondered what the Snyder Cut is all about anyway, this is a version of Zack Snyder who was the initial director of the 2017 Justice League movie but had to step down from the position for another director, Joss Whedon. With that said, there are money to spend and extra characters and a mini-series format in the mix of the rumors which is what we’ll be taking you through in this post altogether as the latest headliner is Ben Affleck who played the character of Batman in the movie has given is own opinion on the news. So let’s examine everything we have heard, seen about the forthcoming movie below shall we.
You might ask what Snyder Cut is anyway
The quickest answer to this is that The Snyder Cut is just a version of the 2017’s Justice League cut together by director Zack Snyder. His take on the superhero ensemble blockbuster which never made it to the theaters after he was apparently required to step down during the final stages of the project.
So the short story behind this was that right after the principal photography had finished back in 2016, Warner Bros. execs reportedly saw rough cut of Snyder’s footage and weren’t just okay with it and so wanted them changed. But by the following year 2017, Snyder stepped down during the editing process to deal with the death of his daughter.
Joss Whedon had to step in to continue with the editorial and reshoots but did not receive a director’s credit which showed that the work is mostly finished and contains Snyder’s original footage. But there were numerous plotlines which were abandoned and the runtime was trimmed down from the initial three and had hours to just 120 minutes. Snyder estimated the movie which was released to being just one fourth of his contribution.
While we’ll probably never know the hard facts of what happened behind-the-scenes on the movie, which was torn to shreds by critics and disappointed at the box office, at least we’ll finally get to see how big the disparity between the two versions really is.
So why is everyone talking about it then?
There are members of the cast that have been clamoring for the release of the Snyder Cut including actress Gal Gadot who played Wonder Woman as well as Henry Cavill who played the Superman and even Jason Momoa, who played the role of Aquaman all rallying behind the Snyder Cut along with a long-running fan campaign on social media which urges Warner Bros to release the cut.
After trending on and off for a year, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut recently surged on Twitter in the lead up to the two-year anniversary of Justice League’s release. And now in his response to the massive support of the release, the chairman of the Warner Media Entertainment which in fact owns HBO Max, Robert Greenblatt said in a recently released statement:
“Since I got here 14 months ago, the chant to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut has been a daily drumbeat in our offices and inboxes. Well, the fans have asked, and we are thrilled to finally deliver. At the end of the day, it really is all about them and we are beyond excited to be able to release Zack’s ultimate vision for this film in 2021. This could never have happened if it weren’t for the hard work and combined efforts of the teams at HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures.”
Snyder also dropped the big news to fans watching his Man of Steel quarantine watch party.
“I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality.”
What’s going to be different?
There will be additional characters
Yes there will be as Snyder hinted back in January where he dropped a still from his original footage which featured Ryan Choi aka Atom, who is a genius size-shifter as well as Martian Manhunter, The Green Lantern and Darkseid who have shown by Snyder as what we could’ve seen if he hasn’t stepped out of the movie back in 2017.
There could be mini-series
With numerous characters, there could be mini series which will allow major characters such as The Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg to have ample character-building screen time where by the mini series or some six chapters that could be on the card all based on what we heard from The Hollywood Reporter.
Snyder’s original crew is getting back together to cut the footage, with a different score, finished visual effects and additional dialogue from actors to fill in the gaps. All of this could cost up to $30 million, THR reports.
And also a different end-credits scene
If you remember the end-credit of the theatrical cut, there was the sword-wielding assassin Deathstroke who joins Lex Luthor in order to create their own Justice League but Actor Joe Manganiello suggested that there could be a different scene which will be linked to Deathstroke’s involvement in Ben Affleck’s now-canned Batman film.
