It’s been long rumored and we even saw a demo of it, the under-display camera which ZTE did but Xiaomi has confirmed that we’ll see a true under display camera smartphone by the year 2021. The Chinese further detailed its third-generation under-screen camera technology as well as what to expect of a future Xiaomi devices.
This will be a milestone for the Chinese tech giant which will once again give users the uninterrupted experience when interacting with their smartphones.
The company further explained that the technology will be able to entirely disguise the selfie camera beneath the device’s display without any effect.
The company explained that based on the device’s pixel arrangement, it will allow the screen to pass on light between gaps of the sub pixels allowing the display to retain its RGB subpixel layout without compromising on pixel density.

This, as per Xiaomi, achieves the same pixel density on the area of the display that houses the camera as the rest of the screen.

The technology uses circuit design to increase the light transmittance of the under-screen camera area. This in combination with the optimized camera sensor will let Xiaomi achieve the under screen camera effect. Xiaomi explains that the device will “perform at par with conventional cameras.” Obviously, we’ll have to test that claim for ourselves before we believe Xiaomi.
So if you’re in a hurry about when we’ll see the under display sensor on a smartphone, then Xiaomi says we might see that by the year 2021 which will be a tech breakthrough for real.
