Don’t write LG off just yet as rumors have been swirling online pertaining to the company’s secret phone project which was codenamed “Wong”. The device did followed another trend in creating a dual screen which unlike current fliping foldable smartphones, the LG Wing has a its own flipping in a twisting motion.
Android Authority was able to lay their hands on an exclusive video which showed a close-to-finish version of the device which might suggest the fact that the release date might not be too far way from now. In the video, this gave a much sneak peek into what the device can do with its dual display feature.
Based on the video, the LG Wing can be seen in a regular portrait orientation with the secondary screen by it’s side as well as in a T-formation. There is also a full-screen navigation on the main screen with music playback controls and an inbound call on the second screen.
What seems to be more interesting is the absence of a notch or hole punch cut out on the display of the device but then you might ask how will LG implement front facing camera to the device after all, the under display camera technology isn’t just anywhere close yet.

What’s the LG Wing
Whagt is good about the LG Wing is the dual screen capacity which ca be a big blessing for better multitasking and for media consumption. LG started this trend back in 2015 with the introduction of the LG V10 whose secondary display is within a casing separate from the main device itself.
But this time around, dual screens has changed really much over the year with folding smartphones becoming the norm. Meanwhile the LG’s approach isn’t to create a simultaneous folding smartphone but an independent device which can be tweaked up with an extra screen if needed.
While this might be a blessing as you’re required to keep the extra screen which can only be summon when needed, but the approach seems to be going some different direction with the new offering.
The LG Wing’s secondary screen this time around isn’t anywhere as big as the main display probably why it’s called a secondary display right. The screen flip out from the bottom of the main main display and then sits perpendicular to it which makes it look like a phone display with a smaller 1:1 aspect ratio right next to the main.
Some rumored specifications of the LG Wings includes a tall 6.8-nch display while the secondary screen will be a smaller 4-inch screen while the device will be powered by the mid-range Snapdragon 765 or 765G SoC according to tipsters though nothing more is known as of now about the device’s specs.
The need for the design approach
The importance of the dual-screen design is for multi-tasking purposes. A good scenario would be when you’re using the primary screen for navigation in your car for example, you can then use the secondary screen for other things such as answering phone calls.
While Android naturally has the split-screen feature which allows you to cut your display into two and use them in half for two different things, the efficiency of this isn’t very sound and that is where the secondary screen comes in.
So being able to multitask would be a great reason this device will be a good release. So scenarios whereby you’re watching YouTube videos, you can use the other side to tweet meanwhile how many applications will support this feature is the other thing to consider or maybe LG could develop the device’s operating system to suite this need whereby they use the split screen API to create a scenario whereby apps that supports the split screen functionality can also support this one maybe through a toggle or whatever means possible of achieving it.
Gaming can be a good use of the LG Wing as well whereby gamers are able to utilize one screen as control while the other as the screen. But with a powerful chipset such as the Snapdragon 765, this could point that LG is including Gamers among its target market.
Availability of the LG Wing
Even though there is a short hands-on video about the device, nothing is known about when the device will be released or for how much it would be sold but if I may guess, I’d say let’s look at November since September is too close.
Also another thing can be that the device might not be mainstream just yet because of the newness of the design which could be polarizing. The company’s home market in South Korea might be the first testing ground to start off with the testing with some limited launch which definitely will come with a really high price tag.
But anyway, it will be nice to see different companies trying out new things much like the beginning of feature phones back when smartphones had styles and uniqueness that sets them all apart from one another.
