Yes you red that right! Samsung of course announced that it has sold about 1 Million units of the Galaxy Folds which sells for about $2000 but elsewhere, the Huawei Mate X is also thriving in the Chinese market despite being sold for a much more higher price point at $8000 on some third-party e-commerce websites.

One obvious differences between the Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X is the design of the latter which folds outwardly whereby the screen becomes the back when folded but then turns back to the screen when unfolded.

As for the specification, it has a flexible OLED screen giving it a massive 8-Inches display even when the device is closed up. Therefore there is jsut one massive screen that extends all over the front surface area of the device just like the Royole FlexPai rather than the Galaxy Fold or Motorola Razr.

What I find intriguing about the Mate X is how the smartphone casing will be made to effectively protect the display without having to rip it off every now and then. But speaking of the display, it’s really awesome and massive.

The fact that it’s super fast and responsive is one obvious thing about the Mate X. While there wasn’t much interaction with the device earlier this year when it was initially announced during the MWC, the fact that I wished I could at least own one so I could interact with it for as long as possible to understand how reliable the technology is never went down.

The massive 6.6-Inches of display when folded makes sense and would draw attention when held especially when you suddenly unfold it in the public where there are numerous people wondering if you’re carrying some Area 51 Alien device.

One thing I truly find interesting about this device is how useful the screen is even when folded. Comparing that with the Galaxy Fold with it’s tiny screen, most of us are used to big displays and having to suddenly shrink down our focus to be able to read notifications on the tiny 4.6-inches display of the Galaxy Fold might not be a great thing.

In contrast, the Mate X’s 6.6-inches display is always there just like the day to day massive Android display we’re already used to.

Another fact is that the Huawei Mate X is super comfy and would be comfy when put in the pocket. But my fear would be to accidentally sit ontop of this thing. I mean I’ve had scenarios whereby I sat on my Mate 20X with its 7.2-Inches maxi display.

But not that’s not all, the fact that the hinge could crack if you wear too tightened jeans at all times might be a big issue or hold-back. But then what about the other screen that converts into the back of the device somehow. I mean Huawei engineers must be cruel to that side of the display exposing it to the much harsher situations and the fact that you don’t have to unfold the Mate X all the time just to reply a text or send an Email means you would care less about the other part which therefore might result in an uneven screen when unfolded….I’m just speculating.

OLED are bright and great. One part where Huawei premium flagship excels is the screen. Because the company would somehow refuse the likes of Honor 20 Pro and those in the mid-range to have an OLED display which is why I would usually recommend OPPO or Xiaomi over mid-range Huawei/Honor smartphones.

But let’s not divert the story, the truth is that the Mate X has an immersive screen that is truly bright and vibrant in every sense. 16M colors is usually the norm of course but I won’t forget the fact that the well laminated display feels as though the screen was laying right on top of the device.

But again, GLASS don’t fold! Meaning there is no Corning Gorilla Glass- Whatever number on this device as far as I can tell. The plastic coating on the protective side of the display means it’s well coated to resist scratches to some degrees.

One interesting thing I also noticed since then was the camera setup. Yes, the other screen at the back could become the screen for camera. I mean there is no selfie camera everything is facing you.

The way the Huawei Mate X is designed, it allows it to have this bump which houses key aspects and functions on the device such as the camera sensors in particular.

The cameras are housed in a vertical arrangement on the bump which can also be a grip just like the way a DSLR would have a grip at the front beside the lens. This is especially handy because nobody has a third arm. Comparing that with the Galaxy Fold and you’ll be like “WOW”.

The specifications of the Huawei Mate X camera isn’t very different from those found on the P30 Pro. The same number and almost the same quality just with few tweaks here and there. No disrespect to the P30 Pro which is actually one of the best camera phones released this year so far.

Other specs are pretty much in line with what you’d expect from any top-end smartphone. It runs Huawei’s latest Kirin 980 octacore processor, has a 4,500-mAh battery with all-day battery life, 512GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM. 

The Huawei Mate X might be lacking one big part and the fact that Huawei doesn’t seems to market the device abroad means you don’t really need to care unless you want something more than the Galaxy Fold. Meanwhile, things could change as we approach the new year and even the Galaxy Fold 2 could have a much more better design and specs who knows.
