Spotify Stories should be about music recommendation not Artists’ Video Messages

The trend of 24/hours auto disappearing posts is now prominent on different social networking platforms

Back in 2017 when Facebook decided to go right after Snapchat’s 24 hours auto disappearing posts, it suddenly became the norm three years later on but then a number of companies then picked it up and it seems to be the new norm. LinkedIn, Behance, Google, even Twitter and of course Spotify of all people. Who am I to judge any company.

The music giant has also dabbled into this bandwagon which is meant to feature images and videos alike from artists on the platform.

From my own point of view, I totally support copying good things just the way OEMs outright copy one another just adding few tweaks in order to avoid copyright infringement.

The message was shared by a Twitter user with the username TmarTn who stated that searching for a keyword such as “Christmas Hits playlist” on Spotify’s mobile application will show you the Stories feature pop up right on the company’s logo which is basically a collection of video messages from a number of artists on the platform.

Spotify has stories now….

But this will not be the first time we’ll be seeing Spotify experiment with different content format. Remember last year, there was this feature which allowed some artists to share insights into their music-making process through stories.

Maybe stories of video messages from artists aren’t the best things Spotify should have there because majority of these guys have millions of followers on Instagram and anyone can literally view their stories/status from there. Whatever video message they’ve got to pass across.

However, it would have been a cool ideal to have song recommendations from artists and other accounts being followed on the platform. This will be unique and will pull more crowd. After all, Spotify is all about the music right?

To be clear, I am not suggesting Spotify Stories should be available to everyone in the current format. I don’t want to see videos of people on a music streaming platform. Just let me see music recommendations — both from artists and my friends.

Currently, sharing of songs to other social networking services is now made possible and being able to create a connection between artists and users as well as allowing for more organic music discovery will be a nice thing to have as well.

Currently, it’s possible to follow your friends and artists on Spotify. But you can only look at what they’re listening to on its desktop app. The Stories format can fill that lack of deep social connections on the platform in a meaningful way. The head of product design at Spotify better hook up with us at BRUMPOST for cool ideas.
