Hands-on overview of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

The new Galaxy Z Fold 2 is official and the new folding smartphone has some quirks and features that makes it really interesting and much more better than it’s predecessor. While possessing everything from triple display to triple camera unit all conjoined by one powerful operating system and the large battery system in the device, this is really one of the very few best Android smartphones out there but it’s definitely not for everyone.

Not for everyone first because the device is quite pricey and not for everyone because it can be too thick for your liking but before we go into the downside of the Galaxy Z Fold 2, let’s talk about the amazing features the device has which includes it’s screen.

This time around unlike the tiny display on the older Galaxy Fold smartphone, the new device now have a Cover screen with a 6.2-inch display measuring 2260×816 pixels and built with the Super AMOLED display with a 25:9 aspect ratio.

But right inside the device is the device’s full screen which can extend to become 7.6-inch which is an increase from the previous generation’s 7.3-inch display with a 2208×1768 pixels and a much better Dynamic AMOLED display technology with 22.5:18 aspect ratio and of course 120Hz refresh rate….what else do you want from a top-tier smartphone.

There is also the much acclaimed Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) technology which is meant to help the device become scratch resistant as well as debris but all is to improve the device’s technology. Even though Samsung claimed the display is a UTG which ultimately stands for glass, the previous Galaxy Z Flip’s had it’s display ripped off as though it was plastic making people doubt whether Samsung was sincere about their claims.

But away from the device’s screen and to the hinge, it gets even more powerful which Samsung calls the Hideaway hinge which uses the CAM mechanism that allows the device to stand on its own from 75 to 115 degrees.

There is also this “Sweeper” structure which is meant to keep debris and dusts away from the device’s hinge just as the company did with the Galaxy Z Flip.

Smaller gaps between both screens meant better folding as well as smaller space for less dusts to enter to cause scratches to the screen which in my own term is quite fragile.

The new Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes in different color choices based on user’s market and that includes metallic silver, metallic gold and metallic blue.

Some of the great advantages of the new device is thee ability to use use different applications when using the device in the Flex mode whereby you can split the device’s screen into two and then use two different applications simultaneously isn’t that cool?

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is equipped with a triple camera system on the device whereby each interface you are, there is a camera for you.

The main is a 12MP f/1.8 sensor with dual pixel autofocus, optical image stabilization and 1.8µm-sized pixels. There’s a 12MP telephoto camera that does 2x zoom with 1.0µm pixels and an f/2.4 lens that’s optically-stabilized. The final sensor is a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide with 1.12µm pixels and a 12mm angle of view.

There are two selfie cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold2 – one 10MP f/2.2 1.22µm is punched into the cover screen and another 10MP f/2.2 1.22µm inside the right half of the folding main screen. You can also use the cover screen as a viewfinder and snap yourself with any of the three main cameras.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is powered by the Snapdragon 865+ chipset with a 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. Those are lots of numbers.

The battery compartment uses a 4,235mAh to 4,500mAh battery with support for 25W wired charging with a PowerShare wireless charging for devices that supports it.

There is support for the 5G technology with both the mmWave and sub-6GHz as well as Ultra-Wideband for spatial awareness connectivity that can be used to send files from the device to other Android-powered smartphones.

Pre-order starts today for the device and is expected to ship to 40 different markets by September 18th. The device is quite pricey as mentioned earlier on.

For the 256GB version, you’ll pay about US$1,999 for the device which is the standard and unless you’re in China will you get the phone with 512GB.

You will get a choice of Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze while in 21 markets, including Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and the US, you will be able to customize the hinge in Metallic Silver, Metallic Gold, Metallic Red and Metallic Blue accents.

There’s a special Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition that’s US$3,299 and comes with the Galaxy Buds Live and Galaxy Watch 3 starting September 25.
