Rockstar Games, the company behind the iconic Grand Theft made it known on Friday that a new version is under active development.

While the company said its goal is “always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered,” it didn’t say when the game will be released.

“We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready,” Rockstar said in its announcement.

The upcoming part will mark the next installment in one of the best-selling game franchises of all time. The game, an action-adventure dates as far back as 25 years and it’s been credited in the industry as being the most influential.

In fact, the 2001’s GTA III popularized the setting of a three-dimensional game world where players are able to explore and do anything they’d like.

Then there was GTA V which in fact broke the industry sales records and became the first entertainment product to hit a whopping US$1 billion in sales within its first three days on the market.

Even as old as it is, GTA V is still one of the top-selling games each year and has since racked up over 155 million copies of sale with over US$ 6 billion in global revenue.

With GTA 6 in development, one can only imagine how good the next installment will do even though the success of the previous installment could have a big impact on the next generation.

While Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, have declined to share release date plans, some industry analysts believe the title will land as early as next year.
