iPhone 13 series might use Samsung’s LTPO display with 120Hz refresh rate

But another report has it the high refresh rate could be for high-end variant of the iPhone 13 series

The new iPhone 12 also has a 6.1-inch OLED display which is far better than the IPS display on the older iPhone 11

The next-gen iPhone 13 might finally be featuring a 120Hz display which could be be developed by Samsung according to a new report.

According to a market study by the research firm UBI Research, The Elec states that Apple will be introducing the LTPO display in its iPhone 13 series and it could also use Samsung’s OLED display technology which could have a 120Hz refresh rate.

While the current iPhone 12 series despite its expensive price point doesn’t even have a 90Hz refresh rate, Apple might finally be considering this move for the very first time.

One of the rumored reasons why the company couldn’t include this feature with the current iPhone 12 series is due to the supply of the display components.

However, Samsung Display currently provides its OLED displays to Apple as its major supplier of displays for iPhones.

For those unaware, low-temperature polycrystalline oxide or LTPO thin-film transistor (TFT) displays are known to be more power-efficient than regular OLED displays. We have seen these displays on devices including Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra, Asus ROG Phone 5, and Apple Watch.

The LTPO is more efficient and support high refresh rate which will befit the high-premium level of the forthcoming iPhone 13 series even though the release of the device could be as late as September.

The report mentions that Samsung Display can guarantee a supply of 30,000 LTPO OLED display substrates to Apple per month. This will be a drop in the total display units supplied to Apple by Samsung. The report states that this is because of an added oxide process in the production of LTPO panels.

Samsung is expected to complete the conversion of its production lines to LTPO TFT within the first half of 2021. Once finished, the report mentions a total production capacity of the lines to be 70,000 substrates per month, down from the previous 105,000.

And this won’t be the first time that Samsung will be rumored to use this technology on its iPhone 13 as one of the brand’s renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has it that the new display technology might only be on the high-end variant of the iPhone 13 series while the base models will have a lower refresh rate.

Kuo also mentioned a significant camera update to be looked forward to on the new iPhones. To back all this, Kuo expects a larger battery backup on the upcoming models than last year’s iPhones.
