Samsung is currently enjoying the top spot in the foldable smartphone market thanks to the success of its Galaxy Z series. While the Galaxy Z Fold 3 was a big hit for the South Korean smartphone brand, we expect the next-gen Galaxy Z Fold 4 to be better.

There is some interesting news swirling across cyberspace on what the device will look like and some of the expected functionalities and specifications of the device.

For a smartphone that took down the Galaxy Note line, it better be up to the task. Below, we have some of the rumors and reports about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. What to expect, when to expect it, and the potential price point of the device when it finally makes its debut.

When will Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 be released?

The next Galaxy Z Fol 4 is expected to debut on Aug. 10th during the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. The event will take place virtually and streaming is expected to commence by 9 a.m. ET or 6 a.m. PT.

Apart from the Galaxy Z Fold 4, we expect the revealing of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 as well, the Galaxy Watch 5, and the Galaxy Buds Pro 2. There’s been a lot of interesting rumors about all of these devices and that day is when those reports will be confirmed.

How much will the Galaxy Z Fold 4 be?

With the number of newcomers in the foldable smartphone market on the rise, Samsung had to cut down the price tag of the previous model by a few hundred dollars and while it still wasn’t cheap like a traditional smartphone, this showed there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Take the previous Galaxy Z Fold 2 from the year 2020 as an example, the device came with a whopping US$2,000 price tag but then the more superior Galaxy Z Fold 3 had a US$200 price drop.

So I won’t be surprised if there is a US$250 to US$300 price slash on the next-gen putting the Galaxy Z Fold 4 in the US$1,700 price tag for the base model.

Another report from a renowned Korean leaker Yeux1122 via Naver and Ross Young both claims that the device would certainly get cheaper and the possibility of the device being sold at a starting price of about US$1,799 is quite possible.

Another popular leaker, Evan Blass added that Samsung could offer a model with 128GB of native storage at the entry price point while the high-end 256GB and 512GB variants will certainly come at a higher price tag.

Even though the base model is considered “affordable”, that is within the foldable smartphone category and not in the broad smartphone category considering the differences in their price point.

However, there’s a slight prediction as far as the price is considered by a European retailer who made it known that there could be a price hike for the device. According to the report, the base model of the device could cost as much as €1,864. However, this is a claim by one retailer and the price could vary from one place to the other.

Another Korean source has it that the price of the device keeps fluctuating in foreign currencies even though it stood the same in the Korean Won. Although a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold series will be a great thing to see, that time isn’t just now. It could be when there are more competitors on the global market while the technology becomes more common.

Can I make a pre-order for the Galaxy Z Fold 4?

Yes, it’s possible to make your reservation for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 by visiting the company’s website. You can also get about US$200 credit if you want to buy a bundle of devices including the smartwatch and the TWS earbuds. But for those getting just the smartphone, Samsung is offering a US$100 credit.

What will the Galaxy Z Fold 4 look like?

rBUnYJeeAhkK9sihh342mT 1200 80

It will look very similar to the previous Galaxy Z Fold 3 – an external narrow screen and an internal big display with support for the S-Pen. What we don’t know yet is the placement of the device’s camera or if Samsung will incorporate the under-display selfie camera just like it did with the previous model.

Also do note that reports suggest that the device would have a less obvious crease even though something similar was expected of the previous model and when compared to the Huawei Mate X2, the difference is obvious.

Speaking of the design of the device, the popular leaker Ice Universe says the device will weigh about 8.9 ounces.

There were also reports that Samsung had made some changes to the hinge of the device even though a render shared by OnLeaks and Smartprix didn’t show this change in full detail.

We expect the device’s camera module to be similar to that of the Galaxy S22 Ultra but we might be amazed to see something different.

The overall size of the device when unfolded is expected to be about 6.1 x 5.1 x 0.27 inches (155 x 130 x 7.1mm). Judging by those numbers, the device would be shorter but wider and thicker than its predecessor.

There will likely not be a silo for the device’s S-Pen compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the placement of the device’s fingerprint scanner will likely remain where it is on the current model.

As for the color options, leaker Ross Young said the device may come in Beige, Grey, or Black color options.

What will be the screen size of the Galaxy Z Fold 4?

According to the aforementioned source, there will be two main displays on the device. The external screen will be a narrowed 6.2-inch AMOLED display while the interior screen will be a bigger 7.6-inch panel. Both screens are expected to offer blazing-fast 120Hz refresh rates.

Also, the protection of the inner display, the Ultra-Thin Glass or UTG material used on the device is expected to be improved according to Yeux1122 – and that should make the screen more resistant to debris and scratches while also making it easier to use the S-Pen on the device.

What are the rumored camera specifications of the Galaxy Z Fold 4

Although the Galaxy Z series was never about the camera capabilities, there should be some improvement as far as this model is concerned and there are rumors to back that fact up.

A report has it that the device could sport a 50MP primary sensor with a wide-angle lens and could be paired with other 12MP ultra-wide and 12MP telephoto cameras.

The report also suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 could be capable of getting a 3x optical zoom capability via its telephoto camera which is an improvement over the 2x optical zoom of the current Galaxy Z Fold 3 model.

Whether Samsung will continue with the under-display front-facing camera is up for debate but there are reports that the South Korean tech giant might be considering it once again.

What about the battery of the Galaxy Z Fold 4?

It will be shameful if this device with so much potential is released with a relatively small battery because leaked specs from both Ice Universe and Yogesh Brar suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 could sport a 4,400mAh battery which is unchanged from the previous model.

Considering the number of screens this device will be having and other features it will also have, I don’t think a 4,400mAh battery is a right answer. The previous model had a terrible battery experience and users often have to run around with power banks and chargers.

Also, the device is rumored to sport the same 25W charging capability as the previous model. Samsung isn’t kin for fast charging which can be disappointing because other brands like Xiaomi are making devices with 150W ultra-fast charging capacity.

What about the processor?

It’s 2022 and we expect the Galaxy Z Fold 4 to sport the current Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset according to Ice Universe which should give the device all the necessary capacity to operate in the ultra-high-end premium arena just like others including the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

In Geekbench 5’s testing, a device thought to be the Galaxy Z Fold 4 got a score of 1,351 in the single-core test and 3,808 in the multi-core result. The listing also hints that the Galaxy Z Fold 4  will use a chip that looks a lot like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus and have 12GB of RAM.

These are the things we may see when the Galaxy Z Fold 4 makes its debut on the 10th. However, some of those reports might be changed or false because they are not official statements from the company itself.

On the other hand, I think there are some improvements that Samsung can make on the device, especially in the battery arena. For a smartphone with three screens – two of whom are conjoined, there is the need for a powerful battery and everything shouldn’t just be about software optimization especially since Samsung is positioning the device as a multitasking tool.

If the price could be brought down a bit as well, it would be a great thing to see but due to the current case of inflation and with consumers across the globe refusing to buy new devices due to the unknown state of the global economy, Samsung might gamble with the price by either hiking it a little or just dropping it. I’m sure they have great financial people on their team.
