Earlier we reported about the likelihood of Samsung being the company to be contracted to manufacture the screens of the iPhone 13 series later on this year the latest we have is that the South Korean tech giant has already began the production of the iPhone 13 120Hz LTPO panel.
Samsung has been one of the biggest suppliers of the OLED panel to Apple and the company had opted to work with Samsung since 2017 when it started using OLED panels on its devices.
While all the iPhone 12 series were equipped with the OLED panel when they debut last year, they missed the 120Hz high refresh rate – a technology that is prevalent throughout high-end Android devices.
There have been rumors about Apple’s iPhone 13 coming with the 120Hz refresh rate and LTPO displays which will make the device much amazing and fluid from a consumer’s stand point.

The fact that Samsung has started making those displays will definitely be a good news to Apple users but there is more to the story.
According to the media site TheElec. Samsung started making the LTPO display with 120Hz refresh rate which will be used only on the high-end iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
According to the source, the display will be made at the A3 Line inside the Asan plant. But only the high-end iPhone 13 series will be equipped with the high-end 120Hz OLED panel while LG Display will handle the production of the LTPS OLED panels for the mid-range and affordable iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini.
Both South Korean companies will share the production with Samsung making about 80 million OLED panels while LG Display will make about 30 million OLED LTPS displays for the forthcoming iPhone 13 series (iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 only).
Another thing is the fact that Samsung will still continue to make OLED panels for the existing iPhone 12 series which debut last year considering the fact that the devices will continue to sell.
With that said, Samsung will make some 120 million OLED panels for Apple this year alone while LG Display will ship about 50 million OLED panels for the iPhones in total.
Another company reported to join the production will be the Chinese display maker BOE which will make about 9 million OLED panels for iPhone.
The Asian trio display makers are said to have started their OLED production one month earlier than last year which might hint the fact that Apple might release the iPhone 13 right on time this year compared to the COVID-9 affected iPhone 12 series back in 2020 which was delayed by 1 month.
Majority of high-end smartphones since 2020 have been equipped with 120Hz panels and that puts Apple behind on the market. There have been a number of rumors about the company migrating to this new technology last year according to rumors and reports.
There was in fact a video leak which we all thought could be true but none of the story came positive. But there were rumors that the COVID-19 pandemic also had some influence on the production of Apple devices and that might be true to some degree.
The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max could come with bigger batteries considering the fact that 120Hz displays often consume device battery faster.
Power efficiency will be key to the production and then the iOS software too will definitely have a part to play by being dynamic and offering only the high refresh rate based on what the user is consuming on their screen just as many high-end Android devices which mean the refresh rate can swing between 10Hz to 120Hz.
