New smartphone brand Nothing is already smiling to the bank in India thanks to the decent number of sales it’s pulling in the region.
According to a report, the company has revealed its sales figures for Phone 1 in India. The premium-looking mid-range smartphone was launched less than two months in the country.
According to the report shared via GSMArena, Nothing’s VP and GM for India, Manu Sharma, made it known that the company had sold over 100,000 Phone 1s in just 20 days of sales in the country.
Sharma says the phone was the bestselling handset on Flipkart in the IN₹30,000-plus (around $378) price range.
And thanks to the publicity the company was able to make while marketing the Phone 1 as being unique in its rights, one can argue those numbers aren’t bad for a first attempt in a market that is already ridden with other big and well-established smartphone brands ranging from premium brands like Apple, Samsung to various Chinese OEMs including Xiaomi, ASUS, and even homegrown brands.
An IDC analysis made it clear that about 35 million devices were shipped between the months of April and June (Q2) of the year which is about 11.7 million smartphones per month.
IDC hasn’t yet published a comparable figure for the month of July and August, but the company reported last year that about 48 million phones were sold during the Q3 of the year at an average of 16 million per month.
If we’re to pull all those info together, we can argue that Nothing’s current share in the Indian smartphone market is less than one percent.
However, when compared to OnePlus’ debut in the Indian market back in the year 2014, the company made over a million units of smartphone sales in its first six months though it had the backing of the Chinese smartphone giant BBK.
However, it’s worth noting that OnePlus at that time wasn’t a startup in the same way as Nothing because the former made its first smartphones available in the North American market – a market skipped by Nothing.
Right now, we can’t say Nothing has failed or succeded in terms of sales in India however, what we may have anticipate for is to see whether the smartphone brand will still be around in the next 10 years.
A spokesperson for the company did not respond to questions about its sales figures in other markets like Europe.
