Apple’s annual event WWDC 2021 is less than a month away and this is usually the time and period to get our hopes up on the updates of the next version of the iOS/iPadOS and this time around, the iOS/iPadOS 15 which will definitely ship with the company’s flagship the iPhone 13 series by fall of 2021.

While nothing is 100% certain just yet, we can expect a number of things to come along during the event and those includes features and specs of the iOS 15 which will also be another major upgrade from the current iOS 14 version.

Since the Cupertino-based tech firm has taken privacy and security to a whole new level prompting a legal battle between the corporation and social network data-hungry giant Facebook, things have never been the same with the release of the iOS 14.5 and this might just be the beginning.

More customization is yet another thing we could expect to see with the update. Currently, you get to customize your iPhone’s user interface to whatever feels better for you thanks to the widget system and the fact that you can sway away from default apps all which makes sense.

Support for icon packs like Android

While this isn’t a comparison post between Android and iOS, one thing we all know Android OS for is the customization. Each individual can create that user interface they want by themselves using launchers and theme packs.

This is long overdue and that should be happening soon with the iOS 15 if I should wish. Even though Apple gets to decide and there are also reasons why the company might never want to go that route, the fact that users can easily swap out an app icon from within the app itself or just by using an icon pack to take care of things automatically might be a good move.

If it can be easier for users to swap out app icons from the home screen, this can set a good precedent for developers to create such feature within the applications since Apple needs to first create the gateway within the iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 first in order for such to ever happen.

How about a launcher capacity like Android

Launchers for those unaware are theme pack applications which comes with different customization options such as icons, colors, background wallpaper and other features.

Do you like this homepage? That’s Ret SILO’s Android home screen on his Android smartphone. Microsoft Launcher is one of the best on the market and it comes with enormous features and cool design aesthetics.

But that’s not all, there are also options like Nova launcher which offer some really crazy customization capabilities and on the Google Play store, there is a plethora of Launchers all just for customization.

If Apple makes this open for developers, I bet the same can be possible with the iOS 15 whereby users get to customize and give their iPhone an individuality just like Android device.

Many times, I do envy people who use Android devices especially my colleague Ret because of his constant customization of his home screen to place whatever he wants on it. Be it activities or giant weather widgets and even statistics from stock applications with those graphs all helping to beautify the home screen.

Limitless widget placement

If anything, at least the ability to drag any widget to wherever we so please and that should even be much more possible with the larger screen on the iPad hence the iPadOS 15 should be much more flexible in terms of widget placement.

On Android for example, compulsive symmetry isn’t built within the operating system which makes it possible for users to drag a widget to any location, resize it and things can get uneven sometimes but that’s because you’re not limited in terms of placement unlike the iOS 14/iPadOS 14.

The good thing about widgets is that you get to have a quick access to an application without having to necessarily open the application and go through the process from the beginning.

Take for example the music player on Ret’s home screen, from there, he just have to click on the play button and then he starts listening to music without having to open the music app and wait until it’s fully loaded.

Also the Microsoft Launcher lets you take notes or stich important notes on your home screen much like when you’re in your office. This will be a great reminder for someone as they are constantly staring at important quick notes they took probably to get tasks done.

Making such available on the iPad OS with its big beautiful display will be a big plus and let’s keep our fingers crossed as Apple prepares its keynote for the WWDC 2021 by June.
