Google & LG might ditch expensive Snapdragon 865

The difference in speed between both SD865 and SD765G isn't noticeable

If you’re concerned about the growing pricing of smartphones nowadays, their components and hardware are part of the reason. Qualcomm id one big name that makes the processor of most smartphone with it’s big flagship, the Snapdragon 865 chipset already powering up numerous smartphones in the market, the price tag on devices running this big chipset is very obvious.

Although some companies like Xiaomi which still sells it’s flagship at a relatively lower price, other smartphones in its line including the Mi 10 series, the Black Shark and iQOO 3 all come within the $1000 price point just as we’ve seen on the rcent Galaxy S20 series or even the Sony XPeria 1 II.

So if you’re concerned that the pricing of smartphones might eventually peak $3000 in coming years, you’re right because even affordable smartphone makers now are hiking the prices of their smartphones and expensive components such as the SnapDragon 865 chipset is one of the reasons for that.

The price tag has increased this year unlike the previous model and with the inclusion of the 5G technology, it’s obvious the pricing keeps increasing. While many consumers are putting up with the exorbitant price tag which have been levied upon them by the OEM to pay off for the expensive chipsets they use in their devices, some companies like Google and LG aren’t willing to subject to this which means they’re opting for cheaper chipsets instead.

LG G9 ThinQ

As we’re expecting Google to launch the Pixel 5 series as well as the Pixel 5a later on this year, there have been reports from XDA Developer that the Pixel 5 series will run a cheaper Snapdragon 756G Premium range chipset rather than the expensive 865.

The XDA Developers website isn’t the only avenue to post this information as another Korean search engine Naver posted that LG will also be joining with Google as it prepares the launch of its LG G9 ThinQ smartphone.

This won’t be the first time though that premium smartphones are being launched with less expensive chipset just as we’ve seen on the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 series, the Nokia 8.3 5G, XTE Axon 11 5G all which runs well on the Snapdragon 765 SoC very well.

Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 765G is the first from the company to incorporate the 5G modem while the much expensive SD 865 comes with a separate SD X55 5G modem

Qualcomm is said to have made it compulsory for OEM to integrate the SD865 with the X55 modem. This explains the absence of a 4G version but then, 4G phones won’t fly in the era of 5G. However, this has led to a more delicate motherboard design as well as bigger battery and screen size, thus driving production cost upwards.

One thing is obvious that the Snapdragon 765G isn’t as fast as the flagship SD 865 which was part of the stigma that affected the values of the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Pro when it was released. Meanwhile, this chipset features six Cortex-A55 cores. While the Snapdragon 865 uses four A77 cores and four A55 cores.

But that’s not too big of a difference in terms of performances which is also subjected to how much memory the device in question is bundled with all which add up to the speed of the chipset in general.
