Still on the India ban of Tik Tok and 58 other Chinese mobile apps

Tik Tok says it's on to complying with the new Indian government order to cease operation from the country

59 Chinese apps banned in India

Earlier we reported about the Chinese government not being happy about the ban of Tik Tok and other 59 Chinese apps banned in India as both country ensued in a land border dispute which had been headlining news lately.

Although the allegations from the Indian government leading to the ban was basically due to security reasons and other bad influence these applications has on the country’s integrity and so forth, other people think the dispute might have strained trade relationship between the two most populous countries in the entire world.

What really happened leading to the ban is a border clash between troops from both China and India leaving soldiers from the latter country a 20 casualty. This definitely led to a big anger from the Indian government over such action whereby the preceding action taken by the Indian government was banning 59 most popular Chinese mobile app services from the country with immediate effect.

The applications ranges from gaming platforms to music streaming and social media services are said to be “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, Security of state and public order” according to statement from the India’s Ministry of Information Technology on Monday.

While Tik Tok might seem to be the biggest among the 59 applications banned in the country, others includes the likes of WeChat which has hundreds of millions of users in the Asian continent, then Baidu’s Weibo which is a Chinese Twitter, even Xiaomi’s video calling app Mi Video Call and other apps such as UC Browser, a mobile browser application much like Opera browser. You can find the complete list of the 59 Chinese apps banned in India below.

While the ban is going on in effect, we wouldn’t know yet if those users who already have these services installed on their devices will have to uninstall them or be generally banned from using them based on the country implementing an IP Address blockage through internet service providers in the country.

But surely, new users who are trying to use the service from Google Play store or Apple App Store are definitely not getting this anylonger at least until further notice.

The ban came as anti-China sentiment erupted in India following the clash back in June along a disputed border between China and India in the Himalayas which has led to an escalation in tension between both giant countries.

Aside the ban, the incident has led to a widespread calls for boycotts of Chinese products which includes their phones, software and other products made and produced from China by Chinese companies or entities.

The incident has led to the cancelling of Oppo’s online launch of it’s premium flagship phones in light of the diplomatic flare-up between the two countries.

India’s technology ministry also said it has received multiple complaints involving the misuse of mobile apps for “for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner” to servers located outside India. The government ministry went on to call the situation a matter of “very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures.”

Tik Tok which has over 120 million users in India since it’s launch had been linked with being notorious about stealing user data as the company says it’s in the process of complying with the ban and has been invited to meet with government stakeholders to submit clarifications even though the company had continued to deny sharing any user’s data with the Chinese government.

“TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and have not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese government,”Nikhil Gandhi, Head of TikTok India, said in a statement on Tuesday. “We place the highest importance on user privacy and integrity.”

Research firm Canalys described the ban as “a blow to the Chinese app industry that loses a strong installed base outside its home country,” in a post on Twitter on Tuesday.

India is the second most populous country in the world right behind China with more than 1.3 billion people and has the fastest growing internet market and mobile market which makes it a big place for companies such as Tik Tok to grow further but the ban would definitely take them back of 120 million users.
