I’m even surprised that we’re even talking about the Huawei Mate 50 series this year considering how long it took the Chinese tech titan to release its P50 series. But that’s not the case, there is a new report based on a Huawei patent spotted online that gave the hint that the company may already be cooking up the Mate 50 series with some really awesome specifications that’ll definitely put it on top of the line.
The Mate series is usually released towards the end of the year and is usually loaded with cool features that set it aside from the P series which is usually released much earlier.
The release schedule in 2021 had a lot of issues due to chip shortage and of course the battle with the US government. That led to a really long delay with the P series being released later in July instead of February or March.
Many have speculated that the delay will have an effect on the release of the Mate series in 2021 – that’s if Huawei is planning to release the device at all and the new patent could shed some light on this – even though this is just a patent and not a leaked device or some insider’s report on what the company is actually working on.
And according to the patent, the Mate 50 series could take the “Horizon display” or “waterfall display” as it’s usually called to the next level. Huawei has been adamant with its wrap-around screen that usually curves sometimes 80 degrees around the sides of its smartphone and might even take a step further with the Mate 50 series.
The company could also implement the under-display camera which seems to be getting popular and could become even more popular by 2021 as companies like ZTE, Xiaomi, and Samsung have already incorporated the technology on their devices.
According to the report on LetsGoDigital, Huawei has reportedly filed a new patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a device with an ultra-curved display that covers the entire edges of the smartphone.
Compared to the current Mate 40 Pro which has about 88-degree edge-to-edge curvature to aid touch functionalities such as summoning the volume rocker virtually (though there is a physical volume rocker compared to the previous Mate 30 Pro which had none).
According to the report, Huawei may be switching from “Horizon display” to “Arc Display” and the curvature will in fact come with some functionalities rather than just being for aesthetics.
It will be able to display things such as quick notifications, battery and will also serve as the virtual volume rocker of the device just as the previous Mate 30 Pro released back in 2019.
A 3D render of the concept looked amazing even though this may never be the case. While most Chinese brands never fail to amaze with newer technologies and out-of-the-box thinking, the practicality of such design is my concern.
Considering the fact that Huawei tried this same wrap-around design with its Mate X foldable smartphone which folds outwardly, its practicality is why the company switched it back inward just like the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
If Huawei releases a Mate 50 series with such a design, then I’ll be sure to confirm that the company has polarized its Mate series lovers forcing them to pick the really curved P50 series or the over-curved Mate 50 series which in my opinion isn’t very practical.
But anyway, this is just a patent as mentioned above and it might never be released. We’re not even sure if there will be a Mate 50 series this year.
