Things to love about the all-new Samsung Galaxy S22 series

Just this past week, Samsung made the bombshell announcement of the much-anticipated Galaxy S22 series which is made up of three devices: The Galaxy S22 base model, S22 Plus, and the obviously Galaxy Note-series-looking Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Many have predicted the ultimate death of the Galaxy Note series since the South Korean giant refused to release one back in 2021 but focused its attention on the Galaxy Z series.

Much of the blames went to the shortage in the supply of microchips globally and that has reportedly affected a number of tech companies as well including Tesla which faulted the delayed release of its Cybertruck on this same premise.

But anyway, now we have the Galaxy S22 series all looking great and smooth. The trio sports some enhanced features and improvements to match up for a 2022 device.

Although these improvements aren’t necessarily over the top compared to their previous generations, one thing for sure is that most smartphones have gotten so good that there are just little tweaks and improvements year-on-year.

But it hurts that a company like LG left the smartphone market since they are the only ones that like to go over the top to do something extreme. Xiaomi seems to be taking that route but I digress.

So what makes the all-new Galaxy S22 series amazing already even though we’re still in the earliest part of the year (as many more devices are expected to debut later on this year).

The Galaxy S’s Identity crisis is now solved

Back in 2011 when the Samsung Galaxy Note made its original debut, the device was known for being the high-end of all the Galaxy smartphones at that time.

In terms of its size and the design of the device as well as its software modification, the device sports some features that were obviously targeted at business-minded people who want a device that they can use as a personal computer on the go.

But the lines started blurring when the company started introducing different devices to its portfolio. First, it was the Galaxy Mega which was humongous but Samsung stopped it.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Hands on review: The modest base model

Then we have the Galaxy A series, the Galaxy M series, the Galaxy S series, The Galaxy Z series, and the Galaxy Note series.

The majority of these lineups are similar in terms of specifications with little differentiation.

Most Chinese smartphone makers like Xiaomi, OPPO, ASUS, or VIVO have been able to create sub-brands that are meant to focus on certain types of devices. A good example of that would be the Redmi which is a spinoff of Xiaomi – targeting low-income consumers with affordable mid-range devices.

In the case of Samsung, hauling the entire lineup might just be distress especially since there is little to no difference between its Galaxy Note series and its Galaxy S series other than the shape of both devices. It’s only sensible to make the move they did this year which is merging the Note with the Galaxy S series.

In other words, the base model Galaxy S22 isn’t just some entry-level device in the whole line-up but a standard device with some high-end specifications and features such as larger sensors, big batteries, and compact form factor.

Compared to the previous model, the new Galaxy S22 is more than half a centimeter shorter compared to the Galaxy S21 model and it’s also slightly boxier on the sides. The same applies to the middle child, the Galaxy S22+ which has shrunk a little bit.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is the new Galaxy Note

Samsung made it in such a way that those who are in love with the shape and functionalities of the Galaxy Note series can continue having that with the new Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Since a child, I’ve always been a big lover of the Samsung Galaxy Note series. And it remains to this day one of my most preferred smartphones on the market.

Even though we are never going to be seeing another Galaxy Note series anytime from now (or ever again), its legacy lives on and that’s the interesting part for fans of the device.

The new Galaxy S22 Ultra has the exact design of the Galaxy Note series, a silo to store the S-Pen, a curved ultra-large display with high-refresh rates, multiple cameras, and a super-fast processor.

So anyone that wants to purchase a high-end Samsung device in 2022 other than a foldable smartphone will know that they don’t have to go through the tedious task of thinking about which one to pick between a Galaxy Note or a Galaxy S because Samsung literally brought the best of the two and merged it into one hence, Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Multiple years of software updates

One thing that made most Apple fans brag about their iPhones is the fact that they get extensive software updates that keep their devices up to date with the company’s latest iterations.

The same can now be said about the all-new Galaxy S22 series. Samsung announced that it’ll be supporting the Galaxy S22 series for about 5 years with major software updates and regular security patches.

Google Pixel once owned this crown because Google owns Android and the Pixel smartphone brand together. It shouldn’t be a hard thing for the tech giant to do right?

But it seems like Samsung is the new Google.

Another interesting thing is the OneUI skin for Android which has now become the gold standard for user interface compared to competitors. Google Pixel 6 series is currently ridden with bugs, OnePlus with its once-beloved OxygenOS seems to be outgoing since the company merged with OPPO and Xiaomi’s MiUI doesn’t seem to be getting the notoriety from most users globally.

Which why Samsung will once again be the main face of Android making it the biggest smartphone maker across the globe while rivaling Apple.
