Elon Musk’s Neuralink ahs been in the news for a really long time but the Tesla boss promises a working demo of the Neuralink technology by Friday. The technology which is meant to be a brain-machine interface will be shown to the public at 6PM ET on Friday.

Musk has spoken much about his optimism on Brain-machine interface devices which are needed to help human keep up with AI by supplementing our brainpower even though his goal is still much simpler as of now which is to create an implantable device that let people control phones or computers with their mind how cool is that?

Back in July, Elon Musk gave us a tip about the August 28th progress update but has now offered more details on what will be shown at the demo event.

He explained that the update will include the unveiling of a second-generation robot that is designed to attach the company’s technology to the brain and a demo of neurons “firing in real-time” even though we do not understand what he meant by those words.

The Neuralink technology is another ambition of Elon Musk which is proposing to connect the brains using flexible electrodes that is much thinner than the human hair which it calls “Threads”.

The current devices used by BMI uses a stiff electrodes to get the task done meanwhile it can cause damage instead, the usage of a flexible electrode can be much more delicate and even challenging to accomplish which is why the company’s focusing on building a “sewing machine” like robot to get the task done.

What Neuralink hopes to do is to use the robots for installation in a non-invasive way just as Lasik eye surgery which might not be requiring the need for general anesthetic.

Musk has previously spoken about the need for an automated Lasik-like process for BMIs to overcome the constraints and costs involved with needing to use highly trained neural surgeons. But this isn’t ready to be shown off yet, according to Musk. “Still far from LASIK, but could get pretty close in a few years,” Musk tweeted in response to a followup question about the event.

Some scientists have shown their support for Musk’s delving into the medical field due to the huge potential of the BMIs technology which could help people with physical challenges such as paralysis and other neurological disorders.

While other scientists have cautioned that these claims for the future utility of these devices are far from proven. Neuralink had announced last year it would start clinical trials by the end of the year 2020 even though it hasn’t given any update on this ambition.
