While the name Discord remains, the company is rebranding itself away from being an application that is dedicated to helping gamers communicate with each other while having some high intense matches online. The company posted through a blog yesterday that it will be changing its focus to make its software into a place where people can find a community, create their own chat sever as well as talk to friends be it in the gaming arena or just mutual communication without any gaming intent.
“Games are what brought many of you on the platform, and we’ll always be grateful for that,” the company said. “Today, many of you use Discord for day-to-day communication. You’re sharing thoughts about books, music and art, creating servers to just be yourself and share moments with friends.”
With that said, what the company is trying to do is that it wants to create a more streamlined experience to bring everyone onboard as well as making it easier to set up a chat server. With the new changes or “rebranding”, there will be less jokes on games which is meant to “make sure everyone can take part in the fun” so it wouldn’t be all about gamers just alone.
Also, the company claims that user safety will be a major focus stating that “we will continue to take decisive action against white supremacists, racists and others who seek to use Discord for evil”.

Discord furthered by saying it has also fixed “hundreds” of bugs, as well as increased voice and video capacity by 200 percent. The new changed can now be seen as they reflects on the company’s new website which includes a newer tagline “Your place to talk” while the landing page barely mentions anything game.
The Discord rebranding has is well detailed out as the company well narrates in it’s blog post about how the changes in branding is a reflection on how people will use the platform. “Looking ahead, we want to focus on the experiences and people that matter to you. And that doesn’t always include games. In many cases, you told us it doesn’t include games at all,” the company said.
Towards the end of the Discord rebranding blog post, the company mentioned that a “US$100 million in addition to funding.” The company was previously valued at about US$2 billion as it raise about US$150 million from investors back in 2018 when it was trying out its own digital storefront for gamers.
But since the past 2 years, so many events have taken place on the platform with the COVID-19 pandemic being one of the many causes of these changes.
Since the start of the year, the number of people using the app daily has increased by 50 percent in the US, doubled in Spain and France and tripled in Italy. Â
Based on a recent report from Bloomberg, Discord had been able to utilize these new stats as an opportunity to raise more capital from investors as well as increase the platform’s valuation to about US$3 billion or US$ billion.
Even the US$100 million mentioned in the rebranding blog post was actually a new funding from investors according to Engadget which now increases the valuation of the platform. With more money pouring in onto the platform, that means more expectations from the service which is expected to break into the mainstream in no time.
