Due to the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday, American parents are now on high alert about the safety of their children. Some are in fact considering bulletproof backpacks for their children.
As of today, the surge in demand for this apparel has seen a massive 800% growth according to a former Secret Service agent, Mike De Geus who is the founder and CEO of a company called Leatherback Gear.
According to him, his company has seen a huge 800% spike in the sales of their fortified Knapsacks since Tuesday’s mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas when an 18-year-old opened fire in an elementary school killing about 19 pupils and 2 teachers.
Mike De Geus has served under many US Presidents since the Clinton era up until Trump when he was a Secret Service agent, those scary guys that wear black suits and black sunshades with earpieces right beside Presidents.
According to Mike, his company’s armored backpack offer the same amount of bulletproof protection he had when he was protecting the former US Presidents.
One of the armored backpacks called Sport One Jr. is said to cost about US$249.99 and it can be separated into two pieces with which one can also have a bulletproof vest in a matter of seconds. The backpack is conjoined but can be detached which can offer protection for the user’s chest and back.
He also said the design of the bulletproof backpack was meant to help protect against active shootings.
Apart from Leatherback Gear, another company that manufacturers such apparel is TuffyPacks which also made it known that its sales for armor inserts that can easily fit into any back have seen a huge 300% increase.
The company’s owner Steve Naremore says the product is being ordered across the country and shipping delivery is already being made.
TuffyPacks is based in Texas and they acknowledge to be working with several school districts across the country but not one in Uvalde, where the tragic incident happened yesterday.
There is also another company called Guard Dog Security which has also claimed a huge surge from consumers and retail partners who carry their bulletproof bags including Lower’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
In a statement to American celebrity gossip site TMZ, the company’s president Yasir Sheikh made it known that his company has donated a portion of its proceeds to Make Our Schools Safe, an organization founded by the parents of a student killed back in the 2018 Parkland shooting in Florida.
