Twitter Permanently Suspends Donald Trump’s Official Account

The move was championed by a number of public figures, Civil Rights groups and Michelle Obama over the President's tweets for inciting violence

After being warned to pull a number of tweets he made in order to get his temporarily suspended account reinstated, the incumbent US President has now gotten his own personal account @RealDonaldTrump permanently suspended as the social discuss platform don’t want to take the risk of the platform being used as a tool to incite social unrest and violence.

President Trump who has garnered more than 88 million followers on the social media platform got his account temporarily banned over three tweets he made on Wednesday which the company deemed a violation of its community guidelines against interfering in election and civic processes.

Twitter had been strict with Trump or so does he say and his recent loss of the U.S. Presidential election to Joe Biden and his rhetoric of election fraud and manipulation had been frowned upon by the social media mega house.

A mob stormed the US Capitol which halted temporarily the certification of Joe Biden as the US President and the incident has led to the death of five individuals. President Trump has however denounce this in a short YouTube video uploaded to his account on the video sharing platform where he stated to have conceded to the election result and he’s willing to peacefully transfer power to the newly elected president Joe Biden in two weeks time.

However, the story at the US Capitol wasn’t a good one which has caused a lot of headlines in the news with many blaming the incumbent President over his handling of the electoral result which in turn caused the crisis. “In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action,” the company said in a tweet.

Twitter and Trump have had a really rough time especially last year as both parties had been on the brink of ousting one another over the COVID-19 pandemic and other things which the company’s policy deemed to be “Fake news” or misinformation.

He was able to hold on to his ever-growing Twitter account over the period of his presidency and Twitter despite threatening on many grounds to ban him never did probably because he was the sitting President as at that time which might not really sit well with the company or whatever is the reason they have.

More pressure from big public figures and political powerhouses like Michelle Obama and a host of other celebrities led to the final dissolution of his account after the incumbent President’s account is said to incite baseless claims of voter fraud that led to the current state of anarchy on the Capitol Hill on Wednesday.

The Washington Post reported some of the criticism came from Twitter’s own employees who wrote a letter to CEO Jack Dorsey and other company executives asking for an investigation into the actions that led to the social network’s role in the Capitol Hill riot.

Twitter made its own stance known in a blog post that two of Trump’s tweets on Friday violated its rules against glorification of violence. One of such tweets includes the incumbent president stating that he will not be attending Biden’s inauguration on January 20th while the other tweet has it that his supporters or “American Patriots” will “have a giant long voice into the future” and “will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!”

The social media company has however stated that they consider the context of the broader event to be based on the Trump’s tweets saying that the last two tweets “were highly likely to encourage and inspire people to replicate the criminal acts that took place at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.”

Freedom of expression has been a key issue and censorship of people from the right has been called out multiple times by lawmakers in the US his tweet about not planning to attend the Presidential inauguration is assumed to be a possible incitement of violence by his “American Patriots” who are being interpreted as those that incited violence at the Capitol Hill.

“We made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules and cannot use Twitter to incite violence. We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement,” Twitter said in a tweet.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Jason Miller, an adviser to Trump, called Twitter’s move “disgusting” in a tweet. “If you don’t think they’re coming for you next, you’re wrong,” Miller tweeted.

While Twitter seems to have ousted the President, his Facebook account is also on an indefinite lockdown while YouTube also pulled down one of his recent video even though his account is still well active on the platform.

The move of ousting Trump from Twitter was praised by some Civil rights groups while also urging the others to follow in Twitter’s footsteps.

On Friday, the Stop Hate for Profit coalition asked Facebook, Twitter, Google parent company Alphabet and other social media platforms to permanently ban Trump. The group is made up of civil rights and advocacy groups including the Anti-Defamation League and Color of Change.

“A fitting end to a legacy of spewing hate and vitriol. President Trump incited the violent riots at the Capitol using social media & paid the price,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a tweet.

And others including the Muslim Advocates among others urged Facebook and YouTube to oust Trump from their platforms. The pressure is currently mounting on these social media services over Trump’s matter but then we’re all left to the question “When is it not okay to say something?”

“It is long past time for these companies to take the steps necessary to address pervasive hate and disinformation on their platforms,” said Muslim Advocates Media Relations Officer Eric Naing.

Many from the Right political spectrum see this as an unfair treatment on the politically conservative individual who have been “silenced” on the internet and refused services because of their political affiliation. While this can be glaring to some extent, many questioned when the same happened on the Left, who get banned or ousted from Twitter?
