How Biden winning the Presidential race could affect the tech industry

Especially relationship with the Chinese government as well as Big tech companies in the industry

You might get to ask the essence of this post but if you remember, the last four years while Donald Trump was the president of the United States, his impact can be felt throughout the tech world especially with the 5G race which led to the ultimate ban of Huawei and a number of Chinese companies from participating in the 5G program in the US. Trump further enjoyed other western countries to follow the same step he took which got Huawei cut off in UK.

But the election is over now and Democratic nominee, Joe Biden who happens to be Barack Obama’s vice president during his term won the election alongside his running mate Sen. Kamala Harris.

The result of the election had been called in favor of Biden since Saturday by popular news outlets such as Fox, CNN, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. The counting of votes took much longer this time around due to states that employed the mail-in ballot system because COVID-19 . Meanwhile the incumbent president Donald Trump stated that he’d challenge the result in court.

In his tweet, Joe Biden stated that he was honored that he had won the election and stated that he’d be the president for all Americans as well as for those who voted for him and those who didn’t. The 77 years old former VP also changed his Twitter bio to resident-elect while his running mate Kamala Harris changed hers to Vice President elect.

“It’s time to stop treating our opponents like they’re our enemies,” Biden told an energetic crowd in Delaware. “They are not our enemies. They are Americans.”

One of the biggest issues the U.S government is still dealing with is the sky-high number of COVID-19 cases and fatal cases and Biden stated that he’d announce as earl as Monday those who will help in combating the deadly disease which ousted millions of Americans from their jobs, homes and plunged the economy towards recession and this was the biggest topic that both Trump and Biden had to deal with during their debates.

Meanwhile one of the issues also being debated on is the influence of big tech companies such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and Amazon all which have been influential and there have been talks as to further regulate these organizations and reduce their big influence in order to allow for free speech and net neutrality.

The previous 2016 election was much influenced by foreign powers and that was one of the big issues to be dealt with during this time as well as these companies needed to regulate “Hate Speech”, disinformation and even foreign interference in the election. On the other side of the spectrum, Trump had stated clearly that he and his fellow Republicans as well as others on the right side of the political spectrum are being censored by big social media organizations but companies like Google, Twitter and Facebook have all denied such allegation.

With Biden taking over the affairs of the country for the next four years, some of the important issues he’ll have to deal with beforehand includes bringing back the economy back to a stable state but that aside, there are a lot of things he’ll also influence which includes foreign policies especially relationship between the U.S. and China, social media influences as well as other important political issues within the country.

In this post, I compiled a list of tech-related issues that’ll be influenced by Joe Biden’s policies through his four years tenure as the President of the United States.

COVID-19 & the state of the economy

This is one of the biggest and most important issue currently at hand that Biden will have to face. One of the biggest issue is the devastating effects of the pandemic on the U.S. economy which has caused millions to lose their jobs while hundreds of thousands others lost their lives due to the disease while millions were infected.

The COVID-19 was one of the biggest topic in the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden with the incumbent president also contracted the disease even though he got treated for it pretty quickly.

But the issue remains that Biden is left with the problem while Americans will look up to him. Biden also stated that he’ll announce a number of competent scientists by Monday to handle the case. We hope he can handle things right this time around as many lives are on the line with many states already seeing rise in the number of cases as fear of 2nd wave kicks in.

Antitrust

There was a 449-page congressional report which detailed abuses of market power by Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook which could be part of things that the Biden administration will have to work on.

The “big tech” as they’re often called have been called in multiple times by the congress over their handling of user’s information and this doesn’t seem to end any time soon even under the new governance.

The US Department of Justice jus last month filed a massive lawsuit against Google stating the company held illegal monopoly practices in the search and the advertising market. There had been numerous claims alleging that Google had deployed anti-competitive practices to hold itself as the search giant it is today while crushing all others.

Back in the Democrat presidential debates, Sen. Elizabeth Warren had stated clearly her decision to break up big tech if elected President of the United States.

Even though Joe Biden won’t be the only one running things in the country, its obvious that the members of the Congress will continue to question the impact of tech companies on the general public and that will continue even after the year 2024.

US relationship with China

There was a serious issue between the US and China over trade relationship over the past 4 years and the COVID-19 made things even worse as President Trump called the Chinese government out for it’s handing of the coronavirus when it was first reported back in December with reports stating that the Chinese government was constantly censoring valuable leads pertaining to the disease which ultimately blew on their face and eventually the world.

But aside the COVID-19, there was issues about security which has prompted President Trump to declare some of Chinese-owned businesses unsafe in the US stating they are potential threats to national security.

Huawei was one of the big companies hit hard by this as the company was outright banned from selling its devices as well as 5G technologies in the US and then there is the on-going issue with TikTok although there was Trump’s verdict that stated the company sell its service to an American company which led to Oracle taking some shares in the newly created TikTok Global with its data stored in the US.

Trump had himself accused Biden of plotting collusion with the Chinese government in order to take back American jobs to China But however Biden will run the affairs and relationship with China, it’ll better be in favor of the Americans as a whole.
