The Hummer EV maintains its iconic design aesthetics with its off-road capacity and lots of perks that comes with it making it the ultimate rival of the Tesla Cybertruck. The EV truck traced its background from the now discontinued Hummer brand owned by American car manufacturing giant General Motors.
The history of the Hummer truck starts back with the company AM General which makes the HUMVEE ight military vehicles then creates the civilian version of the car which is then renamed to Hummer.
In December 1999 AM General sold the Hummer brand name to General Motors, but AM General continued to manufacture the vehicles while GM was responsible for the marketing and distribution of all civilian Hummers produced by AM General. Shortly thereafter, GM introduced two of its own design models, the Hummer H2 and Hummer H3, and renamed the original vehicle to Hummer H1. AM General continued to build the H1 until it was discontinued in 2006, and was contracted by GM to produce the H2.
By 2006, the Hummer began to be exported and sold through importers and distributors in 33 countries. On October 10, 2006, GM began producing the Hummer H3 at its Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa for international markets. The Hummers built there at first were only left-hand drive, but right-hand drive versions were added and exported to Australia and other markets.
On June 1, 2009, as a part of the General Motors bankruptcy announcement, the company revealed that the Hummer brand would be discontinued which led t the abrupt ending of the Hummer brand at least until General Motors resuscitated the brand once again but this time around, it’s being brought back as an EV truck which according to the company sold out as soon as pre-orders were made open to consumers.
The Edition 1 of the Hummer EV truck is expected to arrive in 2022 with the sole model available for the first year considered to being a limited edition which has been made available for pre-order since October 20, 2020.
The color option for the Edition 1 are all expected to come in white with a black roof and bronze-colored wheels with a two-tone black-and-gray interior with bronze accents as well as the “Edition 1” badges plastered on the vehicle – the Edition 1 will also feature Easter eggs themed after the Apollo 11 moon landing.
Away from the interesting design features of the Hummer EV Edition 1, the vehicle is expected to come with three electric motors with a 1000 horsepower, 350+ miles of range, as well as being fully loaded with the Extreme Off-Road package which includes its 35-inch mud-terrain tires, skid plates and rock sliders.
Still on the off-road capabilities, the Hummer EV comes with an interesting “Crab Walk” mode which can be used in extreme situations such as zig zag terrain. In this mode, all four wheels can be steered towards a direction which allows the vehicle to move diagonally in those kinds of terrain.
Edition 1 also includes UltraVision underbody cameras for easier off-road maneuverability and visibility, Watts for Freedom system, adaptive air suspension, steel underbody armor, Extract Mode (lifts the suspension six inches for more clearance), Super Cruise (GM’s driver assistance system that allows for automatic lane change and hands-free driving on compatible highways that have been mapped by GM), a digital key, removable roof panels, GMC’s MultiPro Tailgate.
Reception of the Hummer EV Edition 1 was very good first with its amazing design and second with its capabilities. It boke records as it had sold out in the first 10 minutes of opening the pre-orders. The Edition 1 is expected to be available by Fall 2021.
There is also the Hummer EV3x which also features the identical diagonal movement capability of the Edition 1 called the Crab Walk but also took other features from the latter such as UltraVision, adaptive air suspension, steel underbody armor, Extract Mode, Super Cruise, a digital key, removable roof panels, and MultiPro Tailgate.
However, the EV3x will feature different paint colors, unlike the Edition 1. The EV3x is powered by three electric motors and includes torque vectoring, and ‘Watts to Freedom’ system that allows the full acceleration capability of the EV propulsion system.
The EV3x will output an estimated 800hp with 300+ miles of range, and is expected to be available in Fall of 2022.
Includes all the features of EV2; however, it will also come standard with 4-wheel steer, crabwalk, adaptive air suspension with adaptive ride control, and optional Extract mode. This trim will output an estimated 625hp using a dual motor system, will have an estimated 300+ miles of range, and is expected to be available in Spring of 2023.
This is the base Hummer EV trim which will include super cruise, HD surround view, digital key, infinity roof, a multi pro tailgate, and rear drop glass among other standard features. The EV2 will output an estimated 625hp using a dual motor system, with an estimates 250+ miles of range. It is expected to be available Spring 2024.
General Motors took the production of the Hummer EV serious and that is why the vehicle is being produced at its Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly plan in Michigan. The company recently invested $2.2 billion in the plant for the production of these electric vehicles.
Availability of the production is expected to begin by the Fall of the year 2021. With so much anticipations about the arrival of the Hummer EV truck as well its off-road capacity, this truck is surely going to be a big rival to other existing EV trucks which are already taking the market by storm such as the Rivian RT1 for example but there is also the Tesla Cybertruck expected to also be released by the year 2022.
General Motors released three Quiet Revolution theme teasers of the Hummer EV back in January 30th, 2020 which was then followed up with the first marketing launch with Super Bowl LIV ads on Feb 2nd, 2020 hosting NBA superstar LeBron James as the spokesperson.
The reveal which was initially scheduled for May 20th of the same year was later postponed due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic leaving the revelation to be made on Oct. 20th, 2020 with reservations opening the same day. The Hummer EV truck was sold out in minutes as anticipations around the vehicle was incredible leading the to the vehicle breaking record sales.
The Oct. 20th event was livestreamed virtually to the GMC’s website as well as video sharing giant platform YouTube through a number of short film-styled ads which run during Game 1 of the 2020 World Series and the premier of Season 19 of NBC’s The Voice.
The capabilities of the Hummer EV is why it’s made so much headlines and why it seems to be loved by many people. With a base price of about US$79k, the EV truck is definitely much more expensive compared to the likes of Tesla’s Cybertruck which is expected to start at US$40K however, the many options on the Hummer EV truck as well as its range puts it at an advantage over the Cybertruck.
Specs & Features
The GMC Hummer EV will come with three electric motors which will offer an estimated 1,000 horsepower thanks to its 746 kilowatts and 11,500 pound-feet (15,592 newton-meters) of torque. With this outlandish performance on the paper, only a real-life test can guarantee the absolute capabilities of this vehicle as far as the transmission is concerned.
Multiple reports has it that the car is able to produce somewhere around 800 lb-ft (1,085 Nm) which is parts of what will immediately draw your attention to the EV made to supersede the rest in terms of off-road.
Future owners of the GMC Hummer EV won’t have to worry about topping the power of the vehicle thanks to its impressive 800-volkt DC fast charging which is compatible with chargers of about 350 kilowatts. The GM’s Ultium batteries can be swapped out from parallel to series mode while charging which in turn adds about 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charge.
While GMC is yet to announce the battery’s size just yet, the 24-module double-stacked pack provides an estimated range of about 350-plus miles of range to the car which is why it can get farther than others.
An adaptive air suspension can raise the Hummer up to 6 inches, although the company hasn’t released off-road geometry figures yet. Still, we assume that it will offer impressive ground clearance and approach, departure, and breakover angles, especially given the claim that it can ford more than 2 feet of standing water.
