Cuttlefish can actually change their colors and camouflage themselves without you ever noticing them an inch. Well that’s interesting. They can so camouflage that they would nearly become invincible to your eyes. Based on a report about the Cuttlefish, they are known to have a diverse range if body patterns and can therefore switch which ever they’d prefer almost when they need it simultaneously. In case you ever wondered how possible that is….then…
There is a powerful characteristics in Cuttlefish that is called Chromatophore which is a special kind of cell that is found under their skins. Chromatophore contains sacs that are fully of coloured pigments and that are surrounded by tiny muscles. When a Cuttlefish needs to camouflage, its Brain sends a signs to contract the muscles around the sacs and then the animal’s colour changes. This happens exactly when the sacs and the pigment within them expands and then the camouflage takes place. The Cuttlefish may use this not only to camouflage hut also to impress potential mates and communicate of need be.
How can science learn from it
Engineer at the university of Bristol, England have being able to build an artificial Cuttlefish skin. They sandwiches disks of black rubber between small devices that function like cuttlefish muscles. When the researchers applied electricity to the skin, the device flattened and expanded the black disks, darkening and changing the color of the artificial skin.
So this research on the Cuttlefish as described by engineer Jonathan Rossiter as “The soft structure that nature is so good at making” is said that it could lead to clothing that changes color in a fraction of second. Rossiter also said that people might wear Cuttlefish-inspired clothes for camouflage or for simple fashion.
But what If…
#1. Cars could change their colors too
If a car like those used in popular James Bond movies could become realistic, the Cuttlefish could be a better inspiration behind that. What I’d the carbon fibers being used on cars could also store those colors within them and then while drivers could change which color they’d prefer on the go. This time, it could mean people wouldn’t need to buy too many cars or think about repainting since a single car have more than one color.
#2. If our shoes can change too
Based on the research in Bristol university, it could be clearer that when those application are made on shoes, it could change colors and here we wouldn’t need to buy a shoe of different color again just because in has it all. Nowadays, there are electric shoes which have powered electricity in them. In such way, there might just be a need for higher voltage and some control of some kind somewhere which might make the job easier for the wearer. That would change the face if fashion if it ever became realistic.
#3. If our houses could change
Having to buy many paints every year could he a thing of the past when the artificially inspired Cuttlefish skin system is installed on the walls of a house. It could just be in a form of a wrap with some engineered controls underneath and that would have some controls right within the home and when remote controlled, the house can change its color to the owner’s choice. That would make real sense won’t it ?
#4. Furniture should be included
In this case, if our sofa and other furniture’s could “Color-Shift” that would make a brilliant sense in many thousand ways. This way, we could just have to buy an exotic furniture that has this color system in them and then would have to change whichever color we so want on a regular or scheduled basis. That would he a great invention too.
